@NTA England the firm favourites for this test, unless Australia get them out cheaply. Fill your boots time in terms of batting conditions for the next two days. The Headingly pitch normally cracks a bit if it gets some sunshine so Lyons will be a major weapon if it goes to a 4th innings.

Great stuff England, win this one!

Not really an England supporter (or Aussie) but I've got a couple of days at the 5th test lined up, so I want the series to still be alive. If England win this one ... it will be for sure.

Australian bowlers need a morning where they demonstrate why they're keeping Starc out of the side.

Tricky one, that. For starters he didn't have a superb CWC, and with the red ball has no great performances in recent memory.

But a left hander, with a known ability to swing the ball, and to scuff the pitch a bit for Lyon over the wicket at the RH bats... 🤔

    Keh?!
Wasn't Starc one of the leading wicket takers?

Thought he had an outstanding world cup.

EDIT: he was the leading wicket taker. A new record for world cups with 27.

    CWC2019: 10 matches for 27 wickets @ 18.59 (SR 20.51)
    CWC2015: 8 matches for 22 wickets @ 10.18 (SR 17.4)

Ten point one fucking eight 😮

Tell me he was as good in 2019 versus 2015. Can't be done.

It was interesting to look at each innings, too - working backwards:

    England: 1/70 dismissing bat 2
South Africa: 2/59 dismissing bats 5 and 6
    New Zealand: 5/26 dismissing 3, 5, 8, 9, 10
    England: 4/43 dismissing 3, 4, 5, 9
    Bangladesh: 2/55 😮 dismissing 1 & 7
    Sri Lanka: 4/55 dismissing 2, 4, 6, 7
    Pakistan: 2/43 dismissing 9 & 10
    India: 1/74 😮 dismissing 2
    West Indies: 5/46 dismissing 1, 6, 7, 8 & 10
    Afghanistan: 1/31 😮 dismissing 1

Very hit and miss - distribution of wickets is fairly even but some of the runs conceded shows the price he paid - the semifinal, South Africa, and India really fucked his average. Hardly threatened the Ghanis either.

    1: 3
    2: 3
    3: 2
    4: 2
    5: 3
    6: 3
    7: 3
    8: 2
    9: 4
    10: 2

    @NTA

Detailed analysis NTA! Still doesn't take away from the fact that he was bloody good at the CWC.

I guess for me, the key is the hit-and-miss aspect you mention.
Sure he can be a bit wayward at times, but he also regularly produces a jaffer.

The currently playing quick attack of Pattinson, Cummins and Hazelwood is good. I rate all 3 of them.
But none have the x-factor that Starc does in my view.
Plus he is a lefty. So you add variety and make the batsman have to adapt.

The big question is who of the current 3 do you leave out for Starc...? Tough call.

The lack of an all rounder makes it harder for Starc to make the side. If they had a good 5th bowling option it would be easier to accept his inconsistency

    Very good point.
Maybe they should reconsider the current policy of playing 3 keepers.... It's not like any of them are giving the scorers writers cramp of late.

Roy gone. He just screams of a guy who needs to be dropped and will come back a world beater at test level in three years - needs to actually play some red ball cricket first.

Joe Root's shockingly out of touch.

Needs to start batting half a metre out of his crease or something because he's getting pinned back

Jeez that was a good catch from Warner

Cummins has found a nice spot to Burns. He likes to move across a lot, so this angle is good.

All I can hear in the stump mic is Aussies giving him massive props

Humilation for Captain Root. What a shocker. Out for a second-ball Duck in the Ashes at his home ground. Hard to see him regaining confidence in this series after that.

Ashes looking safe in Aussie hands.

Root basically gave Warner catching practice. Terrible, terrible batting.

Bloody hell you love to write them off! Lotta cricket to go yet.

That said: New Ball Hoff looks like he could take 10.
