Crusaders 2020

@Cyclops really. I’m all for having the best team.
I agree, so long as we're deficient in the position and the domestic cupboard is bare, or relatively bare.
People also need to realise having a foreign international come in could help the development of others in the squad. There is a common complaint that our exodus strengthens NH rugby, and there's no reason why it can't happen here. The same applies to coaching: O'Gara 'fixed' Mo'unga's goalkicking during his time here. Would we rather have that or the likes of a Joe Maddock prematurely promoted?

@chchfanatic said in Crusaders 2020:
@gt12 so the hurricanes wouldn’t take peter Steph dt or Siya kolisi. Or the blues wouldn’t like Farrell as their 10. This guy would be amazing in super rugby.
They may be, but they shouldn’t, as there are only five starting spots per AB position, and we shouldn’t be chasing away NZ players by signing internationals from other countries.
I already dislike us having signed Japanese players at the Chiefs. At the end of the day, our domestic teams must support and strengthen the All Blacks.
Getting Farrell in Super rugby, great! Have him play for the Tahs, so that potential ABs can learn how to deal with him, and we can develop more players who can do so.
I find it strange that this needs pointing out.
-
@Stargazer Though at the time, people like Jager and Geldenhuys probably hadn't yet completed their residential requirements (and are always flight risks even when they're dual qualified).
I can't recall all the details of who the players were - but I can remember writing about it at the time - and it was a significant proportion of the available tighthead slots.

And some wonder why many on this board give Canterbury and Crusaders fans a hard time.
Since when do "those" ferners need a reason to give Canterbury and Crusaders fans a hard time?
-
@Stargazer haha exactly. And us crusaders fans care what others think of us. Your going to hate us anyway. I can see the outcry already if this is true. Personally it seemed to far fetched but with all this Saracens stuff going on , it may be a possibility

@chchfanatic sure. But I want the best Crusaders team and the best ABs team. If we parachute in an English tighthead then we block the development of an NZ option, and meaning we're down to 4 starting slots for the ABs to pick from.
Yeah - a few seasons ago it was pretty notable the number of tightheads playing Super rugby that were either ineligible for NZ or questionable.
Can't remember all of them but doubtless included some of Halanukunuku, Geldenhuys, Alaalatoa, Jager, Tamiefuna.
Pretty sure Tameifuna was still eligible for NZ while he was still here. He hadn't played for Tonga until he moved to France.

Maybe Maro Itoje ?
As if the Crusaders didn't already have enough reasons to hate them.
We would be hated anyway. As you travel the world Plenty of people hate The All Blacks why success,Arrogrant Fans are the 2 main reasons you
hear.it seems success comes with that sort of reaction in the end it makes that team and its supporters stronger, tighter more determined to keep successful so it helps drive success.Which in the end helps the AB's One player from overseas, maybe our younger players in the Academy learn of him and we get stronger that way as well.
Good chat both ways but in the End Franchises what to win its going to happen more I think as it is in Mitre 10.

Yep, I’m not saying it’s true of all Cantabs at all.
Having said that, this smells like, (my guess) ‘we’re losing Sam Whitelock for a year, so why can’t we sign a similar replacement?’
In other words, we might not win, waaaaah.
The answer should be ‘develop your own local replacements or poach from the other provinces and super bases like you have been doing’.

Yeah - I'm pretty sure at the time Halanukunuku and Geldenhuys were the matchday tightheads for the Highlanders and Alaalatoa was the bench tighthead for the Crusaders - plus potentially one more somewhere else (and a few in development positions like Jager) - so it was at least 3/10 possibly 4/10 playing spots occupied by "foreigners".
Too many.

Maybe its just being smart and staying ahead of the Competition the poaching allegation can be aimed at all the franchises its the way of professional sport these days.
Why not get talent to the most successful franchise in SR History and create better players helps the ABs as well. -

Why not get talent to the most successful franchise in SR History and create better players helps the ABs as well. All franchises should have a limit of foreigners (and proper PI players should be given preference) and if they want more they should fund them out of non NZR revenue. NZR should never pay the salary of a player from a competing tier 1 nation.
IMHO obviously.

I'd prefer an NZR approval process where you have to show a lack of genuine alternatives, a benefit to wider NZR (eg a super experienced squady that will help develop younger players, or signing for both super rugby and NPC), or strong connection to NZ (this will generally be the PI players). Number of foreign players already at that side and at that position nationally also a factor. Otherwise we risk these becoming 'visa spots' and teams using them strategically. In a perfect world, every NZ based super rugby player is NZ eligible.

I think this is already in place as I believe the Highlanders had to go through that process for signing James Haskell.

Why not get talent to the most successful franchise in SR History and create better players helps the ABs as well. The poaching comment should have had a fishing pole beside it. I have no problem with how the Saders recruit any NZ eligible player and I understand why ppl would go there.
