I think you could go back every year at squad announcement time and these 'optimum' XVs are posted. Very rarely do we ever see them on the field.
What matters waaaay more is players 23-30.

Yep. You have to have a massive amount of luck to not be dipping deeply into the squad bucket.
Mind you, some gems have been unearthed because of that. -

@Crucial yep, Crusaders and Reece last year...Chiefs with Tu'nukuafe and Ta'avao the year before....
Anyone think Ardron was going to be as good as he turned out?

And those players tend to be involved anyway as injuries are a given throughout a season. Each of the 5 teams will have a larger pool of players involved during the preseason so it will be interesting to see who they are.

@Jonty-lean Taukei'aho over Harris. Jacobson to 6. Karpik to bench over Sowakula. Boshier at 8.

I’ll be intrigued to see how Cruden goes. He was borderline hopeless for Montpellier. Do the chiefs get a returning gem or Luke McAlister Mk II?

@Bovidae Damn, that's lucky, I would have been Highlanders bound if he was signed on and fast running out of teams to support in Super rugby.
Only one left.
@Nepia would never support the Tahs.

@Nogusta That surprises me. When I was at Wesley watching a game in which Vaa'i was playing in I was talking to a local Wesley supporter who was very complimentary about him, saying he had some brains not just athletic ability. He only turns 20 in Jan so plenty of time.
