BLUES – CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERBLUES HQ – Auckland, New Zealand
ABOUT THE BLUES
The Blues are a Professional Rugby Union team based in Auckland, New Zealand that competes in the Super Rugby competition. They are one of the most successful teams in Super Rugby history, having won the competition in its first two seasons, 1996 and 1997, and again in 2003. Additionally, the team were finalists in 1998 and semi-finalists in 2007 and 2011.
When rugby became professional in 1996, New Zealand’s five Super Rugby teams were owned by the NZRU and managed by boards representing the provincial rugby unions in each team’s region. 2013 brought about the beginning of a new era for the Blues with NZR offering a licence to operate the club until 2020.
The resulting new structure is a separate limited liability partnership involving the Auckland, North Harbour and Northland Provincial Unions. NZ Rugby currently holds the remaining shares but in the future, is likely to introduce a new private investor for the Blues.
In recent seasons, the Blues have not achieved the on-field success they have been seeking and the organisation is highly motivated to reverse that trend while laying the foundations for sustained long term success.
ROLE SUMMARY
Reporting to the Board of Directors, you will be responsible for developing the Blues into an outstanding sporting organisation, by ensuring the foundations are in place to consistently win the Super Rugby competition while delivering a return to shareholders.
You will provide vision and leadership to rugby in the region, represent the Blues with distinction as a member of the domestic and international rugby community and ensure the Blues comply with all key obligations under its License Agreement with New Zealand Rugby.
You will be responsible for representing and enhancing the Blues brand nationally and globally, for building sustainable commercial partnerships, ensuring the strategic goals and objectives of the organisation are achieved while at all times ensuring the high-performance rugby program is world-class.
DESIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
You will have proven experience working in a senior executive position in New Zealand and / or overseas as well as a successful track record for delivering innovative growth and commercial development strategies.
You will possess an inspiring and engaging leadership style, have excellent presentation skills, strong commercial acumen and demonstrate an outstanding ability to build, develop and harness sustainable relationships across diverse stakeholder groups locally, nationally and internationally.
A deep empathy and passion for high performance sport, in particular rugby union will be important as well as the ability to deal with a high level of public scrutiny.
This is a rare opportunity to lead one of New Zealand’s highest profile sporting brands to ensure sustainability, profitability and high-performance excellence on and off the field.
APPLICATION CLOSING DATE – 5.00pm Monday 26thAugust, 2019

Why am I being punished?
-
Cowley-Tuioti and Duffie have re-signed.
Cowley-Tuioti I don't mind but Duffie is a questionable re-signing.
-
So the CEO applications closed 3 weeks ago. Haven't heard any rumours around about who might have applied? Anyone got thoughts on who might have applied or a wish list as to who you hope applied? Maybe a couple of the 80 odd failed NZRFU applicants tried out for it as a backup.
-
@Daffy-Jaffy Doug Howlett is back in the country isn't he?
-
Exciting young Bay of Plenty winger Emoni Narawa has signed for the Blues for the 2020 Investec Super Rugby season.
The 20-year-old has been signed for two years after impressing the Blues coaches when he came in as a replacement player this season, and was a stand out player for the Blues A team against the touring Honda Heat side from Japan.
Narawa, born in Fiji, schooled at Hamilton Boys High on scholarship before being recruited by Bay of Plenty. His debut last year only lasted 50 minutes before breaking his ankle, although he returned to play Sevens for the Steamers and has been impressive in this year’s Mitre-10 Cup.
“Emoni is an elusive, fast and smart young winger who impressed us not just with his of field attributes but as an excellent young man,” said Blues General Manager High Performance, Tony Hanks.
“He will fit in with our approach to the game and we think he has enormous potential.”
Emoni features in the top 3 wingers in the Mitre 10 Cup for defenders beaten, is first in clean breaks and has so far scored three tries.
-
Happy with that signing. Should see plenty of game time with Clarke gone with the 7s.
-
Clarke and Nanai are out, and we still have Ioane, Duffie, and Tele'a. Should see some game time then, especially if Ioane plays at 13 some times. Duffie to be more of a 15 option next year?
Manu would be a good option to play 13 and wing.
Any other prospects? Telea from Harbour, and Fainga'anuku from Ta$man?
-
@African-Monkey plus if Reiko follows through with his reported request to move into centre next season. They will need further wing signings also. Maybe Tele'a can be used there again but Duffie is only any use as Fullback cover now, he seems to have lost too much pace to play wing at super level.
