they might have been better coming up with some BS like "it was all about the principle anyway and we're just happy he playing somewhere"

@kirwan i hadn't heard it was done without his consent, surely he had the version he signed without the changes?
As I recall the ever so clever ARU chief executive had no appreciation of the nature and import of "entire agreement", which is one of the earliest lessons they teach at chief executive's kindy classes.
There was an attempt to add a "side agreement" after signing, the sort of thing that brings a broad smile to a solicitor's face, and a quiet but firm "No."
Oooops - late to the discussion I see, mistook this as a current rehash.

fuck the NRL is absolutely killing it
First we have the refs completely robbing the Tigers
Then Proctor commits Titans suicide by social media (off to the Dolphins?)
And now 7 dickheads from Manly won't play this weekend because the jersey has a rainbow stripe on it.Religious beliefs isn't it? Clearly that doesn't extend to wearing a jersey sponsored by a gambling company and a liquor company. Just anything that suggests they support queers. Dicks

yep, dicks.
They need to win this game too, so nice work boys. I bet the rest of the team is just ecstatic. -
And, just for a change, Paul Kent is making himself look like a fluffybunny, and saying this is a bad look for Manly
He's just begging for his Sky News spot

Wasn't pride month ages ago?
Quite frankly this ridiculous symbolism is getting tiring anyway. If as an organisation you need to proclaim you aren't out discriminating, hang some bunting.

I wouldn't normally join these kind of arguments/conversations but I just can't agree with you two.
From a Christian perspective it's one thing to have to play in a jersey that is sponsored by companies who sell things you don't agree with. But it's complete next level to have to wear something that is trying to celebrate something you disagree with.
I mean most people would wear something sponsored by Tobacco etc, but to wear something celebrating it?!....
And also it sounds like they were unaware of it until they were told they have to wear it this week

Whatβs the difference to a player between promotion and celebration? What if it was Pride Promotion, promoting Pride? Would that be ok?

Maybe 5-10 years ago plus I would have thought these guys complete gronks not going out in that jersey, but these days the pride rainbow seems to be a whole lot more than equal rights to gay people. Now its recognising 30+ genders, being ok with cross dressing adult entertainers educating your children, biological men keeping woman out of top level sport, gender changing hormones for kids and anyone being against any of that demonised and cancelled by big corporates amongst almost every institution there is. It used to be brave to support gay rights, now its brave to merely mention that maybe things have gone too far.
Maybe just keep political bs out of sports so we can go back to just enjoying it for what it is.
-
If Manly actually want to practice what they preach then they should sack these guys. I tend to agree that the whole thing is virtue signaling nonsense, but that's not why these guys are boycotting the game. They genuinely appear to not support gay people. Surely an organisation like Manly that purports to be an ally would not want to employ people with than mindset?

Like tolerance?
Edited to add a bit more of a constructive reponse:
I think your distinction between sponsored and celebrating is a largely artificial one. The team are promoting the sponsors by having them on their jersey, and teams will refuse to accept certain sponsors on principle, it's not a neutral thing.
Part of the issue I guess is that the rainbow means different things to different people. To some it just means acceptance and support of queer folk; to some people it means promoting homosexuality; some people will even attach it to some more controversial topics like trans women in sports or using the bathroom. Lots of nonsense and unnecessary outrage over a small gesture of support, IMO.
I agree that the club stuff up big time by dropping this on social media without talking to the players first though. That was dumb and they put their players in the firing line unnecessary

That's a weird take. You think it's not possible to say "we support the LGBetc. community" without sacking guys who don't want to wear the jersey?
Maybe, if they'd been making awful homophobic comments, but as far as I'm aware they've not said anything like that
