@barbarian but would i have a beer with him? gee probably not. big quality i look for in my cricketers
Bradman didn’t like a beer but I’m sure you’d pick him

I don’t reckon they have quite the same depth in the bowling departmen
oof
maybe not from the early 90s
but beyond that? The four they have now are unlikely to make the 2nd XI and they are brilliant.
Even spin, i mean Warnie walks in. Nathan Lyon has 539 wickets.
Stuart MacGill has 200+ wickets at less than 30 as the forgotten leg spinner who only played when Warnie got himself suspended. And that's before black and white dudes like Richie Benaud.i think if you start listing them out the list will start stretching fast than you think.
I’m talking relatively speaking.
I mean their batting depth of guys you’d consider ‘very good’ is ridiculous. Ross Taylor level give or take…..I Chappell, M Waugh, Hussey, Clarke, Langer, Martyn, Warner, Kawaja, Tubby, Boon, Slater, D Jones……again, all terrific players but no chance of an all time XI
I just don’t reckon the bowling depth is quite as high overall.

You'd have a beer with Hazlewood tho. And try to slip him a roofie

For me I think Kombucha boy is already in the top four pace bowlers. Will have over 300 wickets bye end of calendar year which puts him in elite category anyway
All subjective of course but only Lillee and McGrath are automatic entries
Lillee, Quick, good average able to rip through teams with 10 wicket bags. The most by a pace bowler in Australia still. Based on recency ,most remember McGrath anyway and his stats speak for himself, best average, incredible amount of wicketsThen a massive debate for remaining spot.. lots of names could fit here
If two spinners then you have to think about Lyon, Grimmet, MacGill. Imagine having the third highest amount of test wickets in Australian history and not making the starting 11 (Lyon)

Re Punter and Smith, I'd be swayed by Smith having a cumulative average over 60 during the period 2016-2022. That's astonishing, even if every other country suddenly forgot how to bowl and wickets were practice nets for batsmen.
Since 2018 it has actually been historically difficult for batting.
2000 through to about 2017 was a relatively easy batting era. In particular, the 00s.
(judging by batting overall averages)

The mean batting average post WW2 is 30.50
Every year of the 2000s had an overall average north of that.

England are awful
Watched the highlights package and the dropped catches were embarrassing - even a social cricket team would demand a higher standard than that. Players in catching positions seemed surprised by the ball coming to them .....

Lyon is absolutely no chance. You also haven’t mentioned Richie Benaud who I’d pick ahead of any of them based on what I’ve heard/read. Lyon is very good and had excellent longevity but not elite.
Lillee, McGrath and Warne are the automatic picks for me.
I’d go Pat Cummins as well.
Gilchrist bats seven. Another no brainer. Others might have been better keepers but his overall impact is too much to ignore.
It gets a wee bit tough from there on in.
Hayden opens. I’m honestly not sure who partners him though.
Bradman, Ponting, Smith in that order. Greg Chappell VERY unlucky.
Then how the hell do you seperate Border and S Waugh for that last spot, not to mention Keith Miller for the all rounder position of 6 or 7 ?
Can you have an all time Aussie XI without Border AND S Waugh ? Seems unthinkable but Miller was a legend ( again, an old timer who I’ve heard great things about )

Add in the great Caversham export Clarrie Grimmett as well as Bill 'Tiger' O'Reilly from those black and white dudes.
