Ireland Coaching Announcement

@tewaio Would've been nice if the IRFU had used clearer language. Are they saying he's retiring?
Joe Schmidt has today announced that he will finish coaching following the Rugby World Cup in Japan next year.
The bit about his family could mean anything from wanting to be based in NZ, to not wanting the travel of an international or Super Rugby coach, or even retiring altogether.
Speaking about his decision to finish coaching Joe Schmidt said: ""I have decided to finish coaching and will prioritise family commitments after the RWC in 2019.

Family commitments means returning to New Zealand, the rest plays for time until an annoucement of Steve Hansen's intentions and a possible vacancy as All Blacks coach appear.
As written, it suggests Schmidt will have a break then and do media work in early 2020. It doesn't rule out coaching after mid-2020. Or being an assistant coach before that.
My guess is that Joseph Schmidt will be involved in coaching the All Blacks in future.

Andy Farrell will become head coach after the tournament
Well, he was such a huge success with England - both playing and coaching.

Presumably he can't make any announcements about his future until the Hansen makes his announcement.
One assumes he applies to the job if it's open. Even if not ideal timing if you want the job one presumes you take it.
Schmidt could be spent and need a spell (Ted did), perhaps Hansen gets coaxed into staying on another two years - he still looks to have the energy the only question is would he facilitate a hand off to anyone other than Foster? Schmidt could either assist on the AB side or take a Ted type role at ITM Cup level if he really wants to wind things back.
Last thing I could see him doing is taking a Super commitment - too much travel & the NZ conference is too demanding - may as well be coaching at international level.

His family/son is biggest priority in next 2-3 years. Heading back to NZ after RWC. Coaching not on the agenda, he’s finished with it as he needs to focus on family/health. Maybe that’ll change in a few years time.

Good on him. Hopefully he wont be personally bringing Wiremu back with him!
So we're stuck with Foster, I guess?

Most interesting thing here perhaps is that Ireland didn't go for Scott Robertson. Razor looks like an International Coach in waiting.
As I have said before, both Warren Gatland and Joe Schmidt will be living in NZ again from 2020. I can't see them both twiddling their thumbs all day.

I’m tipping when he returns to Nz , he will take a break from a full time role , but dip his toes in the water with an assistant / advisory role of some description.
