@dogmeat True. He doesn't need to get Northland back - we have MMP where you just sign up to a party that gets 5% and get a seat in Parliament. It really doesn't matter if the majority don't want you there. (That is about the system in general - not specifically Winnie).
Yes, I know there aren't many better systems but I have just been chased by a swarm of angry wasps. Never knew that they would nest in an old stack of pavers so I'm taking some time to get angry about other things while they calm down enough for me to kill them.

Auckland is still wedged between a national stadium that is on the smaller side (~55k) and a single-purpose rectangular stadium that is on the larger side (~40k+).
The time to strike for the former was pre-RWC, with a Lions tour looming (doubly so in hindsight with the earthquake delivering more premium games to EP). Better to bide there time now, deal with Eden Park as best as possible and try and take on the residents association.

Yes. This all seems quite rushed. And in the very unlikely possibility that it actually gets built it will be incredibly expensive to build and incredibly expensive to operate. E.g it is under fucking sea level. and the pumps will be going 24/7, 365.
This is a really stupid idea IMO.
However, if the entire port gets shifted out to the Hauraki Gulf / Firth of Thames in a 30 year horizon. Then there will be some sensible developable ex-port land (beside Spark Arena , old central station) that would make a good choice, at about exactly the time Auckland will need to decide about the next major spending on Eden Park, and at about a time that NZ might want to bid for a RWC.
This rushed decision to try and squeeze a ridiculously expensive build onto one of the finger wharves is just absolute bonkers.
The end goal for Auckland should be:
- a 20k rectangular stadium
- a 65k rectangular national stadium
- a cricket oval
This is where I get whimsical ..... Two of the 3 options above should be attempted to develop together at the same site sharing a back-back stand to reduce operational costs (shared concourse, toilets, food outlets, corporate lounge, power substation etc). Sites for a 2 field facility would probably be too big for the ex-port. So explore Alexandra Park, Avondale, Mt Smart.
Eden Park could actually handle an expanded cricket oval on outer oval + small 20k rectangular configuration. The restriction would be the amount of night games for a facility hosting Super Rugby, NRL and cricket.

I think at 65k we would struggle to fill it more than once in an average year for the best AB test. The occasional World Cup Qualifier, the first SoO in NZ, Lions Tour or the odd concert may justify it - but even for the standard slate of AB tests I see it being a bit of an Olympic Stadium type albatross.
Things could change in the next twenty years, but the case for filling a large stadium for rugby/league regularly in Auckland is certainly a lot weaker than it was two decades ago.
Do love the idea of a 20k stadium + cricket oval sharing facilities. Eden Park 1&2 do (did?) this somewhat but obviously the facilities are pretty limited this would be on a much grander scale.
