    • A stadium is a poor use of such a prime site. As I have said before - there's a reason renders of stadia are always night shots with stands brilliantly lit up a people spilling out into the surrounding area. The reality is that during the day every one of them is effectively and blank walled citadel 13 stories high with no activity or street level engagement.

I disagree on this one - the MCG and Skydome in Toronto are both large, downtown stadiums and look great IMO.

As you say though we do have a tendency to do things on the cheap, so constructing a 50,000 toilet is always a possibility.

. Just because you can doesn't mean you should

There's something that worries me about this project. Just have that suspicion that if you try to get too fancy anything that could go wrong will go wrong.

Just have a Montreal Olympic Stadium vibe about it.

For sure. So many things could go wrong and construction costs will be much greater. Will they need to build a dry dock of sorts just to construct the stadium? They should keep it simple

I thought that we had done the leaky building thing already...this could be a whole other level.

We already have the tepid baths for swimming in downtown AKL, and a harbour.

There does appear to be some pessimism about all this - perhaps it is just experience.

All of this, and @canefan 's comments - reek of the type of pessimism I despise when I start a new job.
"We tried this, and it didnt' work - so never try again"
when any competent motherfucker looks at what was done before, and says "yeah - you tried it, but you fucked it up"

Sure - optimististki somewhat - but do it, DO IT WELL, and it would be fucking awesome.

@kruse Agree that it could be fantastic but you have more faith than I do.

I'm about to build a house - needless to say that it doesn't have internal gutters - because water.

Not sure I have faith - just the reasons for arguing against it are flawed.
If I had awesome engineers that I trusted - I'd support it. In a heartbeat.
But yeah, I assume 90% of people are dumb as fuck and incompetent, so... if I was building a house, unless I was micro-managing (actually... doing) everything, sure - I'd be avoiding risk.

Even engineers fuck up. Look at CTV, that bridge in Italy, the Titanic..... Water is so pervasive. It finds a way eventually. Raise it out of the water on piles like Etihad in Melbourne and maybe. Otherwise fugedaboutit

That is where there may be a problem.

Then the private money "dries up" (yes, I know) and the rate payers "bail it out" (yes, again).

Yep. Just been through that on other thread. Unfortunately I won't be there with my superiority complex to micro manage the stadium as I will be busy supervising the morans building my house.

If we hit rock bottom central government will steady the ship and calm the waters.

It will be a national stadium after all.

There's more to the cost of a waterfront stadium in Auckland than just swapping it for Eden Park.

@taniwharugby The only consequence of doing so he gives jack about is regaining Northland

@dogmeat True. He doesn't need to get Northland back - we have MMP where you just sign up to a party that gets 5% and get a seat in Parliament. It really doesn't matter if the majority don't want you there. (That is about the system in general - not specifically Winnie).

Yes, I know there aren't many better systems but I have just been chased by a swarm of angry wasps. Never knew that they would nest in an old stack of pavers so I'm taking some time to get angry about other things while they calm down enough for me to kill them.
