game there for the taking, but ultimately discipline costing us.

THink a couple of big calls didnt go right; Pryor double movement, at worst he was short, at best it was a try as he moved immediately, hard on attack to then be pinged and then that last one, the Otago player had the ball and ref called it not out.

BUt at the end of the day, we held the game in our hands and let it slide.

    27-24

@taniwharugby double bugger. Went to turn the game on and it was finished, and we lost. Can’t even see a replay. Crap.

@kev ha I thought it was a 7.35 k/o but heard them talk about it on RS as I was driving home!

Def a game we could have and probably should have won.

We lost that game due to extremely poor game management, and a lack of patience.

I understand that they’re playing an attacking game plan and give it a crack, but jeezus, it doesn’t have to be helter skelter for 80 minutes of the game does it? We’ve got to learn when to push that last pass and when not too, it looks like we’re trying to score off every single play at times. Sometimes taking the tackle and and recycling the ball is the far better option than going for the miracle play in traffic.

And the 10 (no idea how to spell his name and too lazy to look it up), isn’t he meant to have a huge boot? If so why the hell don’t we use it on our exit plays?
We put so much pressure on ourselves with shockingly poor exits. Nothing worse than seeing Goodhue grab a beauty of a take then we insist on fucking up that good ball. Every time we scored points we were immediately straight back under pressure.

Fix those two issues and we’ll be a bloody tough team to beat.

    Goodhue was excellent.
    Matich his usual busy self.
Thought Tua looked pretty good on the wing, a nice finish for his try and a couple of nicely taken high balls.
We need to get Hyland involved more, he’s not the quickest but he runs smart lines and has a decent step.
    Ranger great again.
Nock was pretty good too I thought.

Gaaahhhhh, what a frustrating team to support. The usual great stuff mixed in with the pretty effing stupid stuff.

@gunner yeah his prodigious boot has been lacking somewhat in the first 4 games.

I thought Ranger was quieter this week, rushed out of the line a couple of times which they made good ground from, but otherwise was very busy but those 2 penalties were pretty silly.

That try saver from Nock was superb, so often in that situation people let it go, no way I can stop that...he has grown so much the last 3 games, looks like the heat from Kitto has had a great effect on his game.

But yep, a number of times we are too impatient or try the 50/50 one too many times and it costs us dearly.

Goodhue really standing up these past few games, coming of age season for him?

Thought Gregory showed his inexperience out there tonight, talent to burn, but a couple of occasions he lacked a bit of awareness, although probably a bit tough on him given other more experienced players did the same, was just one I thought we were in for all money...nek minut Pryor pinged!

Def Tua's best game this season, looked busy and more assured on d.

Some better timing with some passes and running and we'd not have blown about 3 chances, again.

Our scrum is very solid, which is why I was surprised we took the points (which in hindsight was probably the right call) instead of a scrum 30 out.

@taniwharugby yes, I was going to mention that Gregory looked like a possum in the headlights when he got the ball with an open line - fucking put your foot down lad. Instead he showed about as much pace as I would have...

@gunner I just think Gregory looks new at this level. Watched the highlights which is nothing but there is a lot to this team now. We will have to win these close ones though and game management (bloody exits) is crucial.

@steven-harris Mayanavanua was solid, MacNamara got on as well, maybe 20 mins, didnt notice too much either way.

It was just a few poor decisions and errors at the worst time, while I still reckon the double movement call was harsh (also thought we were under advantage) Pryor didnt need to go for it.

GRegory seemed like he was stuck between gassing it and going for the corner and drawing and passing to an unmarked man, and in the end did neither.

There was another time we had big numbers in thier 22 and a poor pass led to a knock on, plus another couple of raids where better execution would likely have resulted in a try.

Too many blown chances, we are creating plenty, defending well for the most part, but just accuracy killing us.

@steven-harris The big Fijian did ok, not overly prominent, but did his job. McNamara got on in the second spell, once again didn’t stand out but did what he was supposed to.

I agree with all you guys on the exit plays. When are we going to learn to get the hell out of our own territory without messing something up? Even if we play a bit of force back with the opposition we can come up with some net gains.

Still way to many 50/50 offloads and chip/grubber kicks for my liking. If in doubt go to bloody ground, our ruck clean outs have been a strength this year..use them!

Better sort our shit out for Manawatu next week, they are our bogey team and haven’t lost to us in 8 years. You can bet your bottom dollar they’ll be popping their fizz for a result after their last two weeks...

You’re dead right Kev, our team looks so close to being a side that can beat anyone, we just need to address some of our decision making.

If everything clicks we could comfortably beat most sides..and I mean comfortably.

Thanks for the updates, sounds like we missed a trick, that’s a couple of away games we could have walked away with the 4 points.
Was just reading on transfer wires that Murray Douglas has signed with the Brumbies for 2019 & 2020

Good on him, is odd though as Plumtree was still saying he was is the picture for the Canes next year. Heard that on The Breakdown mid week.

Wonder if he still comes back to Northland though. Can’t see any reason why not..

thought it was a bit shit sending Matthews on with time all but up on the clock!

Maybe he had been on the sideline for 5 minutes waiting for a break in play to get on, but from here it seemed stupid coming on for the lineout which they simply needed to catch and kick out to finish the game
