@R-L Needs to be heard on a decent sound system to fully appreciate it though.

Listened to Concrete and Gold this morning for the first time in a while.

It really is a modern classic that album. Suspect it will be in my top 20 in years to come.

What are people's thoughts on the 8/16D issue? Gimmick or revelation or somewhere in between?

I quite enjoyed the sensation of the only 8D song I've listened to, but want sure if I'd want all music to play the same

@voodoo Honestly mate .. it's been a long time since I was completely blown away by some new technology. And when I got the viral sound going, I totally was.

I think it's amazing. Yes, there are arguments as to how it can really be used, but it still completely blew my mind. I'd love to hear some live rock music though, to see if at volume you can get that concert sensation.

I was lucky enough to go the the Dolby HQ in Soho a while back and had a demo of Dolby Atmos in their amazing theatre. It was matched to a movie to show possibilities but my mind was spinning with the music possibilities where you could be placed right in the band if you wanted

@MajorRage a mate of mine put it like this "it's like I was alone on the dance floor of their sound check rehersal" . Summed it up well I thought .

Moving from 1 ear to the other is one thing, but when it felt like it was coming from a speaker many metres away, that was wicked

You are still thinking 2 dimensionally though. The real trick is using the whole multi directional capability where you can imagine height as well.
Think of being inside a spherical speaker. A proper immersive environment. Where you can 'feel' the bass coming from below or standing in front of the drumkit and the sounds are from slightly different levels.

@Crucial does the current tech allow that or is that next level?

Current tech. Maybe not fully effective through headphones yet as you are restricted to two speakers but certainly in sound systems. Don't even need speakers set up all around you either as some of the new soundbars work on bouncing the sound around.
The biggest trick is in the mixing so basically you place each track into a 'sphere' image imaging the listener in the middle. A whole new avenue for music production.

It’s just panned and delayed 2-channel stereo. If it’s your thing then get hold of a copy of Boom3D (available for Mac and Windows) and apply it to anything you want. It’s a lot more controlled than any of the 8D stuff I’ve heard too.

As @Crucial says there’s no substitute for actual directed sound sources.

Bet quite a few of us are flicking around on YouTube killing time at the moment. Thought it might b good to highlight some live versions of songs that really do it and take an already great track to another level

Going to start with this performance by Pulp. Absolutely brilliant version of Common People that makes you wish you were in the crowd.

(I think this came into my feed as Westworld used the song and the original is getting lots of attention lately)

So many good live performances from the Faces on YouTube but I have to put this one in because, remarkably for a TV show, the mix is great. Ron’s guitar cranked up, solid kick and snare from Kenney, even Ronnie’s Bass cuts through.

Extra points for two great, and completely different riffs in the first minute.

Amazing to think that to replace Steve Marriot, the guys needed Rod Stewart AND Ron Wood.
The results were epic though. The ultimate rock and roll band.

And also to think that when they split it was to fill the shoes of Brian Jones and Keith Moon.

I went to gig in London a year back by Kenney Jones. Has assembled a band to play highlights from his career. Pretty amazing repertoire.

you read these guys' books, and it was this incestuous little group that just kept forming bands, or performing on each others albums. It sounded like an amazing time.

Last one for the day. This performance from the Reverend Al just blows me away. Apart from the vocals themselves, microphone management from Green (and possibly the sound guy) is incredible. One second he is right up in it then he’s doing a breathy falsetto from three feet away.

I also wonder whatever became of that lucky little kid in the front row that looks so enthralled.

Things aren't looking good for two big gigs in May. FNM and Iron Maiden. Following Metallica's postponement, I won't be a happy chappy.
