Black Caps v England Test series

I like how Sodhi and Wagner were really focused on the draw - showing once again how hard it is to dismiss a batsman if they don't play shots - a lesson that wasn't learnt by 6 of the top 7.
It wasn't learnt by the English bowlers either - so much short stuff. As Swann pointed out on commentary the de Grandhomme wicket almost helped NZ because it gave England hope that a barrage of short stuff would eventually net a wicket - but instead it just meant Sodhi and Wagner very few balls to defend.
The contrast in captaincy and planning between Williamson in the last test and Root here was clear for all to see. The English bowlers and Root got a bit distracted and lacked a plan once they hit the tail - which does happen very often in these pressure 4th innings with the ball.

Ish that the first time we have been higher than Oz in the Rankings?
I see what you did there.
As the test rankings only started in 2003 I would say yes.
Thanks for noticing

But the best was Coney - especially during the two rained out days at Eden Park. To kill time Waddle asked what his favourite cricket ground was and Coney then gave a riveting 30 minute story about a game he played in Pakistan. Then said the Basin was his favourite ground. Classic.
Coney is one of the best around. Highly rated in the UK where he is/was regularly on the BBC radio's excellent cricket commentary and also on Sky TV's team*. Think he still lives in the UK.
*To be fair, it isn't hard to shine in a commentary team which includes Ian Botham...

Awesome job by Ish and Wag to save the game. However their heroics shouldn't paper over the fact that the rest of the team, except maybe Latham, played in an utterly brainless way where it was clear thet needed to bat for a draw. Some of those dismissals were criminal.
There still appears to be a bit of a mental weakness with this team with the way they bat and the way they capitulated against Australia in the short form.
A lot of the blame needs to be laid on the coach and captain here. If these guys are too dumb to work out for themselves that hitting the ball in the air while trying to bat out an innings is a bad idea they should be sat down and have it drilled into them before they go out to bat. -

I can't poke too much criticism at them for that. Some of the bowling was really good

I thought Kane fell into the same trap in the first innings - a barrage of short pitched stuff - Wagner to Wood - and Wood got his highest ever test score. Brought back Southee (too late) who pitched it up and knocked him over.

I think this current black caps team is a bit prone to over committing to a plan. Guys seem to get a few too many overs when it doesn't seem to be working. The short ball barrage is one example, under use of spinners is another. Sometimes we need to change plans faster.
I think Wagner and a spinner would make an excellent partnership with the old ball, offering very different challenges and depending on the strengths of a batsman either could be seen as the 'easy' option, creating opportunities for soft dismissals as they look to target their 'option'. De Grandhomme doesn't offer enough with the older ball for the amount of overs he bowls.
The one example that always sticks with me is in the Auckland drawn test vs England Kane didn't get a bowl until the final hour, or even later, and immediately took two wickets.
