I think the lack of action in this thread indicates how much of a drawcard the West Indies aren't.
Yeah, it's a shame but that is the reality. Some reasonable players but not enough to he competitive at test level.
Pleasing that we are getting the job done in comprehensive fashion though. We have a bloody good side now, we'll never have a team full of stars but we've got enough quality to compete with anyone, particularly at home. Which makes such a lack of tests a bit hard to stomach.

Or maybe in there instead of Santner who is a bowling all rounder who hasn't bowled and has hardly set the world on fire with the bat.
Nicholls actually has an ok record overall.

@siam Interestingly, if you compare BJ's batting record with Nicholls' - since Nicholls started (i.e.against the same opposition) - they're pretty similar.
I'd stick with Nicholls, since we're going to need a replacement for Rossco in the not too distant future, and I quite like that he has made scores against South Africa and Australia. He's not stellar, but he can bat.

I agree. He's not amazing but he's certainly far from terrible. 10 years ago his place would have been assured but as we're pretty strong overall it's not which I guess is a good thing.
Taylor retiring will leave an absolutely massive hole though. I hope it's still a long time coming.

I agree. Nicholls technique is not perfect, but I like him because he's shown he has what it takes mentally, which is something you can't really teach. As he develops he will (hopefully) iron out any technical deficiencies. I'm pretty hopeful he can end up averaging 40+ which is very good by our standards.
I would be much happier with BJ coming out at 6 than Santner, but we've discussed that already and haven't really come up with any satisfactory answers on that - if he's not in the side then we need someone better than CdG or our bowling options will be severely limited.

I agree. Nicholls technique is not perfect, but I like him because he's shown he has what it takes mentally, which is something you can't really teach. CDG snuck a cheeky 2/40 which was handy but is that down to how crap the windies are ? Probably.

@no-quarter Yeah the top 6 looks a lot more solid with BJ batting at six and given the relative quality of our top four (compared to what we've often had during the past 25 years) he's probably not going to have to keep and then quickly be out there batting too often (and currently Santner's not going to buy him too much additional time anyway).
BJ at six, CDGH at seven (or Anderson or Neesham if either of those two can supplant Colin), Santner at eight looks the best order to me.
The commentators were also saying that Southee has been working on becoming a more reliable batsman, which would be extremely handy if it came to fruition. Hesson appears to be sticking a bit of a needle into Timmy by promoting Wagner ahead of him!

I think Southee would be in ahead of Wagner whenever quick runs are required and Boult has also shown he's far from the worst number 11.
By Black Caps standards a top 6 of Raval, Latham, KW, Rossco, Nicholls and Watling could be damn near our best of all time. ( seriously )
Throw in a pretty bloody useful pace attack and we're quite within our rights to expect this bunch to pummel the windies.

He does get a bit of stick for someone who is a 'bowler who can bat'. If it comes off he is really effective on his day.
