Another break see Moulds tacked in the corner, another missed opportunity..
-
@taniwharugby very solid,
-
Rangers drops ball with line open, still had had 30tp go,but I would have backed him, bugger
-
sounds like they had a rev up at the break!
-
@taniwharugby just not nailing all the chances, lots of changes starting to take place
-
21 minutes!Matt Wright try try in the corner, after the after constant pressure,Jono Kitto has come in the 10minutes and looks the goods
Debreczeni looks superb at first fiveNorthland 24-5
-
14 to go,changes for Africa..
-
sounds like a much better effort into the wind
-
After a long period of defence,Northland break out and almost score again, needed a wing out wide though, not a forward
-
Southland try right on time to Southlands best player James Wilson and conversion Final Score,Northland 24 Southland 12
Outstanding for Northland Tom Robinson
Will bring a more detailed report this evening
Thanks hanging in. -
Thanks for the updates
-
Thanks as always @Steven-Harris
Good to hear Robinson went well after being out for a season from injury
-
Sorry guys have just done a copy and paste which I put on FB
The Taniwha after a slow start conceded an early try, credit to the Southland forwards who dominated the ball in the first 15 minutes, and managed to get on the outside of Northland and scored a good try in the corner,I thought for the next 20 Northland dominated field position and ball which resulted in a series of drives to which Kara Pryor scored close to the posts and converted.
A superb try by Hyland who took in a cross kick from Debreczeni 40 metres out, showed both power and pace to run in beside the sticks which was converted, came from some great turnover work at breakdown.
Some really good D before halftime was also a feature holding out the stags for multiple phases.
Halftime 14-5A much better 2nd half and started well several minutes in with Ranger starting it taking a miss directed kick in his own half, some great inter play with Hohaia saw Ranger touch down in the left corner.
19-5
Matt Wright touched down several minutes later with a try on the right side after some great carries from Tom Robinson (my player of the day, played the full 80,seemed like he was everywhere and played most of the 80 minutes)
which was unconverted
24-5
There were many changes in the 2nd half, and while Southland had most of the ball in the last 15,the defence was impressive only conceding a late try to Stags best player James Wilson
Final score 24-12 NorthlandJust a few thoughts,
As previously said,Tom Robinson was enormous,Matt Moulds the skipper always a willing support player
and Jacob Matiu just gets stuck into everything wether carrying or tackling,
Matich always plays well with plenty of energy.
Scrum was very solid in the main, and I thought had dominance in what was an even battle,
Great to see Chris Apoua who was in the Taniwha squad last year getting a run for Southland
In the backs,Blake Hohaia always looked dangerous and made a couple of superb breaks, just needs the support runners on his shoulder a tad quicker,
Good to see Tamati Tua back playing, got better as the game progressed ,
Both Ranger and Hyland were always a constant threat,Ranger always a handful, would have loved to have seen Hyland with a bit more ball, the man is a beast at the minute..
Matt Wright at the back always looking to get involved,Just finally, really impressed with a couple of the new signings,
Jack Debreczeni looked really good in the 10 jersey, has a good pass, and a big boot,
Also really impressed with Jono Kitto who came of the bench, plenty talk from the halfback and has some nice touches, will be some good competition for all our 3 halfbacks. If you wanted to be critical,
At least 5 x clear cut scoring chances went begging,
But better we save that for the Cup games.
No points for today’s game, but a good hit out for next weeks starter.
North Harbour at Albany next Thursday,
Credit to Southland for making the Trip up to Auckland today, all the best to you guys as well. All the best to Taniwha coaching staff and team for this years Mitre 10 Cup .
-
Thanks for the report Steve. Sounds very promising. I don’t like to get too carried away, as we all know what happens when we do, but I’m sensing we may have another reasonably successful season.
Those first three games are going to be very tough, I’d be happy to knock one of either Harbour, Auckland or Taranaki, before hopefully getting more consistent results.
I’m sure with the ticker we show, we could knock em all over!! Fingers crossed.
-
You know we’re on the up,when our unwanted players are being signed for other unions for this years Mitre 10 Cup
Chris Apoua (Southland)
Josh Larsen (Otago)
Howard Silioto (Counties Manukau)
Taniela (Dan) Koroi (Auckland) came up from Wellington and played for Waipu
And I believe Robbie Abel,ex Northland and current Brumbies back up hooker is playing for Auckland..big call, with great respect I did not rate him when he was at Northland or with the current Brumbies, however I stand to be corrected.Have I missed anyone..?
-
@steven-harris TBF, Abel didnt get much of a run for us, may have even picked up a decent injury.
Was Sililoto unwanted though, I rated him.
Josh Larsen seemed a handy player, didnt get alot of game time but punched above when he did.
You did miss the most obvious one, although not unwanted...Alaimalo
But agree with your sentiment!
-
@taniwharugby I think I would put the loss of Alaimalo in a category of its own..
Dumb Ass union decision. -
@steven-harris I guess with Eckland and Pleasants-Tate out they are pretty short of experience there.
-
@tim probably makes sense, interesting Auckland have Taniela Koroi, who played for Waipu in the Northland comp,he is a noted scrummager and is a more than useful ball carrier,
Would have made the Taniwha squad if he had started the club season from day dot,and been part of the high performance squad, but he came into the comp in the 2nd roundI think he will be a good pick up for Auckland,I have heard if Jack Whetton does not make the Ak squad this year ,he will look at Northland for 2019 as an option .

Northland Dev is playing North Harbour Dev in a preseason hit out in Waipu tomorrow, kick off time is 2:30pm
