NBL: Breakers and stuff

Reading the Stuff article, Ili will be the starting PG with Weeks providing cover from the bench. That means Sosa won't be back. They are looking for an import at SG.
Weeks averaged 8 points, 2 assists and 2 rebounds in 19 minutes a game according to the same article.

The Taipans are really being gutted
questions should be asked of the back office. How is we ended up on everyone being off contract at the same time? Including the coach?
I saw an article in the local rag blaming it on sacking the coach meaning we lost Gliddon and McCarron. That's bullshit IMO. If you decide the team needs a new playing direction, you don't change your mind based on the possibility of players leaving. But having your whole roster off contract at the end of the same season is madness.
It's not that i wanted to keep them all, but having 3 players on your roster is hardly ideal (Loughton got an extension at the end of last week). Actually i think we signed a guard from Perth on the weekend. I have horrible visions of watching Damon Heuir starting every game (who is worse than Weeks).

More changes at the Breakers. Rob Loe has signed for the Taipans and management is allowing Alex Pledger to test the market.
So an all new front line for the new season. They do need more scoring from the 4 and 5 spots.
Maybe it's time for a change, maybe not. But stability is out the window and I can't see how we will be competitive with a brand new team, unless that team is filled with mostly excellent players from the NBA or the D league

There seems to be a lot of player movement this offseason. Every team not called Melbourne is making changes. The Kings have signed Bogut.
Looking at the Breakers roster they have:
PG: Ili, Weeks
SG:
SF: Abercrombie
PF: Delany
PledgerSG will either be a US import (Newbill?) or maybe Webster. Add in Ngatai and Raukawa for depth at guard.
PF likely to be Wesley. Fotu as the 3rd option.
A centre from the US. I doubt they would be letting Loe and Pledger go without a very good plan B option. -
Some insight into Henare's exit.

@bovidae A big reason the Breakers found success in recent years (apart from winning titles) was the well known Kiwi names on the roster who had either had success overseas or were stalwarts in the NZ NBL.
I thought the 'you need Australians' was only a league thing.
-
I think you need a mixture. The title winning teams also had some Aussies like Bruton, Corletto, Carter as well as the US imports and Kiwis.
Henare has/had a foot in both camps as the NBL also served a purpose of providing many of the Tall Black players with the chance to play in a top level competition. If you selected the best Tall Blacks squad half the team would come from overseas anyway (Europe, NBA) and not the Breakers.
We'll have to wait and see who is in the final squad.

@bovidae Agree with the mixture of import players and Aussies but I was referring to winning attention in the crowded Auckland entertainment market and getting the casual sports fan to watch a Breakers game on tv or at the NSEC. That's going to be the serious challenge for this new ownership.

Winning helps

The starting five is looking better as Webster returns.

So 8 players signed.
PG: Shea Ili, Jarrad Weeks
SG: Corey Webster
SF: Tom Abercrombie, Jordan Ngatai (SF/PF)
PF: Tai Wesley, Finn Delany (SF/PF)
C : Majok Majok (PF/C).They can sign 3 imports.
Good base, need good imports now. Tai Wesley is a great signing because he doesn't qualify as an import
-
Good to have Wesley back. He had a great season with United. Took his game to another level from where he was with the Breakers.
He will be a certain starter.

We’ve signed Armani Moore and Patrick Richard. Interesting because they are similar players and similar size.
Moore I watched a bit of when he played college ball for the Vols. Athletic guard/forward that wasn’t a big scorer but was an excellent rebounder for his size. More a slasher than shooter and a very willing passer.
Richard has been playing in Europe and is a more accomplished scorer than Moore and a decent rebounder as well. Has good anticipation and gets into the passing lanes on D.
We need another big.
