Brilliant first game. Where are all the posts knocking Latham now?? Stoked he seems to have found his niche. Nothing wrong with being more Sangakkara than Gilchrist. Great chance to win a series in India now!
That's a strange comment. Latham was terrible for a good chunk of last summer and deserved criticism. He has been replaced as an opener so now we have to use Munro there. He's a good player but his future probably has to be up the order as he is isn't seen as a long term keeper.

@no-quarter Kohli only got another 80-odd after that drop.
Normally one would be pissed off that a drop batsmen went on to get a hundy, but he didn't score overly quickly, and he wasn't destructive - so in some respect he was contained - I'd suggest we got away with it a little bit. -
@mimic
we could at least try some of these other shit guys, if they're shit too we're not losing much - what about Ferguson, Wagner, for the one time in 10 games Southee does well, we'd get that from these others too, all while getting experience into them (mainly Ferguson in that sense)
Southee is not the future. -
I downloaded the new Sky Sports Highlights app thinking I'd get some comprehensive highlghts at my fingertips. The first 10 times I tried to launch it it crashed, and now that I'm finally in a see they have 3 minute highlights for each innings, with no chromecast option. For fuck Sky, why do you have to be so fucking shit at everything you do? It's like they threw $10 at this initiative then rolled it out.
But enough whinging, that is an absolutely steller result after a decent break. From what I could see Rosco anchored well, riding a bit of luck against the spinners, and Latham was superb all round doing a great job smothering the spin with his sweeps.
Some pretty big positives to take from that:
- Boult was absolutely superb, looked likely with nearly every ball of his first spell, and is bowling in the 140s. Bodes well.
- Santner doing the Vettori job very well, he's building a very good ODI record now.
- Kohli got 121, Kane got 6, but we still won by 6 wickets!
- Rosco in the runs early, hoping he builds confidence for a big summer.
- As has been said Latham was excellent. He lost confidence last season so hopefully this puts him in good stead, he's a quality cricketer.
There's always some negatives as well, like Southee releasing a fair amount of pressure with wayward bowling at the start, but I can't really think of an obvious replacement for him at this stage - perhaps Matt Henry though he's been far from consistent in his career to date.
Anyway, overall absolutely stoked, and a great oppotunity to win a series in India which would be amazing.
-
@no-quarter as much as I bag Southee, those early releases of pressure were inches from catches too - but I guess that also changes the entire outcome of the match if they were.
Still time for Southee to go, or find 10mph extra pace, "bend ya back you useless flog" -
@westcoastie yeah, fair point, the bouncers nearly paid dividends but at the same time the runs released a bit of pressure with Boult going so well. Not that Rohit seemed to realise though, the shot he got out too was a shocker.
I'm comfortable going with Southee in the mean time, but the situation is screaming for someone to put their hand up and take the new ball with Boult long term. Would love to see Henry make some strides this year.
-
@no-quarter forgot about Matt Henry...hes a bit Southee-lite too though. Need Milne to step up and become Starc-like
-
One other thing of note was Doull talking about the speed ball radar, and how there are three guns taking measurements. The Aussies always take the fastest, whereas in NZ we take the middle one. Which explains the commonly held belief that the Aussies "ramp up" their radar to make bowlers seem faster (others may be aware of that already but I learnt something)
-
We have a few blokes hovering around but nobody really screaming "PICK ME!". Will be interesting to see how it plays out this summer.
@hydro11 agree that Mitch would be a good option, he's a real wicket taker in the shorter forms. Milne has recently recovered from an elbow injury too so I wonder (hope) if his pace will increase as the tour goes on.

It's not strange at all. Despite his potential and, he's copped plenty on here with regards his ability to play ODIs, fullstop. I've always said he or Nicholls needed to be the ODI 'keeper.

Did people really dispute that Latham was a talented young player with a great future. I'm just saying that someone who averages about 10 over 10 ODIs is going to cop criticism and that criticism will stop once they hit a century.
-
He deserved the criticism last summer - he was terrible. Hopefully this means Latham can solve both the Black Caps' wicketkeeping and number five batting spot this summer.
