Raeburn Shield

@davesofthunder We want them to keep it so the ABs can take it back in the RC

@machpants South Africa play Georgia twice! Let Georgia take it in this game, and SA take it back next week!
-
And just to keep this thread updated.
The Wallabies are now the Raeburn Shield holders after taking it off of the Springboks.
If the All Blacks want a shot at it they really need the Boks to win it back this weekend.

-
one of the holders should just make the thing and give it to the next team that beats them, once its out there it would keep going

Thatโs pretty much what I see happening, a boklash!

I am actually thinking about just finding a woodworking class (or a youtube woodworker who wants an interesting project) and just getting it done.
I have spent so much time on the shield that the idea I actually create the physical shields appeal a lot!
-
@davesofthunder start a GoFundMe!

I'm not fussed if we win the shield back, just want that number one ranking.

^^^ This. There are a few who would contribute I suspect.
Get a price, though, and consider a stage. Ranfurly Shield was orginally smaller, but had 'add ons' to make it bigger. You could do the same - have an initial shield of decent quality, but with future design concept to make it bigger/more meaningful
-
Yep I might come calling on a crowd fund at some point. ๐
I did actually chat to a guy from Thomas Lyte (who make a lot of the major trophies) and it would be possible with enough cash but I haven't taken that further.
At the moment I am seriously considering just paying for wood workshop time and tuition and just making them myself and then doing the same for the metal and engraving on top.
Would be hugely satisfying for me and as someone else mentioned to me I could be the Lord Bledisloe of World Rugbh which is not so bad for a simple kiwi boy

@davesofthunder seriously, I think you'd be better off getting a 'name' in the field to make it. You are going to need to sell this to RU and/or broadcasters to get it on the pitch and presented, and 'I made this myself' will be a big red flag, no matter how good it is. Also, woodworking is hard
Suggest a gofundme - if you can even show an 'I'm about to get this made' piece, you could start the ball rolling. Ultimately, though, your pathway is probably through players, players associations, rugby unions or broadcasters to get this considered.
It's a fight worth having, as I think it's great. Good luck!

love him or hate him, have you thought about getting someone like the "legend of marty banks" dude to talk it up, he has thousands of followers now and could be a route into getting players etc behind it too
-
@kiwiwomble him or Sumo, or plenty of others you could reach out to via social media...these guys have big audiences
-
@kiwiwomble Nah, he's just an individual fan like us, who has used the name of a popular rugby player to gain followers. If anyone of us started a "King Richie" account on social media with a profile picture of McCaw and had the time/money to travel around the country and post a lot of rugby stuff, he'd also get many followers.
Support is needed from someone who has actually achieved something in rugby. Get someone like McCaw or Carter to support it. Carter seems very approachable.
-
@stargazer i mean, he's got nearly 60k followers and manages to do this professionally, he's always getting in with various unions and chats with players, no one actually thinks its Marty Banks
My point was While Richie and DC have achieved actual stuff on the pitch, theyre now leading semi personal lives and so less likely to reply to a DM than someone actually trying to make a living of rugby hype, a stepping stone

was thinking about this @Davesofthunder. I think you have to go down the line of getting a union on board to present it. It needs to be on the field, after a game and that needs a union to accept it.
So, the challenge is to get a line of communication into NZRU or ARU (current holders). Arguably it may need World Rugby sanctioning as well.
Players may not be the best avenue for that. You coudl do worse than hit up Dylan Cleaver (who's just gone out on his own, and must have good rugby connections with players and the NZRU)... he can probably put out some feelers if he's interested. Will no doubt be active on twitter as well.
Alternatively, try and get others on board to drive this ... GAGR seem linked to the ARU, and as current holders they may be interested. You're into this chicken/egg though of getting a shield manufactured, but then trying to get it actually recognised or presented.
Good luck - I'm sure the Fern Hive Mind will come up with more ideas as well
