NBA Season 2017/18

This is how I think the decision was made. He has a bad rep, he is now broken. He can get a ring and only play two 3rds of the season(due back In Dec 18) to do it. If his body doesn't respond well at least he has a ring. If his body does respond then he has a ring and can negotiate a max contract. $5m is small based on his ability but he knows things are probably going to get better in 12 months.

@raznomore there are a lot of win wins surrounding this deal.
No team was going to offer him the sort of money he wanted knowing that he won’t be playing for another 6 months and that there is always a risk coming back from an achilles.
He calls the Warriors (he likes living in Cali as an aside) and they offer him a one year minimum vets contract with the player option knowingbfill well that he will miss at least the first quarter of the season. No other team could or would bear that risk as they are either chasing the Warriors or on a rebuild.
The Warriors depth allows them to take such a risk knowing that if he does get his body right that they have a 25 and 12 guy that extends the defence and has excellent skills.
Win wins.

@rocky-rockbottom given his situation I think him holding out will be more beneficial financially. He just needs to get his body right and then he’ll get close to $30+ million per season and probably a 3 or 4 year deal.
That’s a smart move Imo.

Likely his politics.
I like Pop, his interviews are classic.
-
@bovidae he's a prickly old bastard but you can not really fault the guy on his player development, tactical ability and yeah some classic soundbites.
I had hoped he would retire this off season though. With the death of his wife and the ongoing dramas with Kawhi.

Melo will leave the Thunder and free up $100m in the process. We need to throw some money at Kyle Corver and Kawhi...
It will save them 100M in luxury tax. They won't be buying another max level player

I am sure he is a good coach.. I am not equipped to judge him on that. but he is an obnoxious rude twat.
-
@baron-silas-greenback hes also a bit an extreme lefty. But he, like many of the public are sick to death of the retarded questions the media throw out in interviews and pressers. If you had to deal with that for 70 to 80 games a year for the million years hes been in the nba im sure itd turn you into a bit of a grump.
-
Boston is going to be an interesting place this coming season - with or without Marcus Smart. Apparently he’s a little upset that no deal has been sorted....

@canefan we arent getting kawhi. it was just wishful thinking.
I haven't seen anything reported. LA are right to wait and see. No point in gutting your young core when the star player could leave after one year. He'll be able to come on a free the following year, and if not LA will be in prime position to snag one of the many free agents on offer

He's using the Bill Belichick technique
