Footy World Cup - NZ V Peru
-
Pundits and ex-players in Peru don't rate us, with one great labelling us as a "Team of the 80s ". They should beat us but it doesn't hurt that they are heaping more pressure on themselves. We need to keep things tight for as long as possible, trying to turn the game into a war of attrition because the longer the hosts go without getting ahead the more nervous they'll feel

First 20 minutes or so, Peru looked like they were just going to slice the AWs apart but the structure seemed to work well and Peru didn't get much space and didn't have an outstanding individual to scare us. Really missed Wood as NZ aren't good enough to short pass from back to front and lobbing the ball to the midget forwards just saw it come straight back.
Wood did really well when he came on - he is a big unit and cannot be shunted off the ball and is also skilled enough to control it. Lewis is probably the other key player as a goal is needed in Peru, Rojas just doesn't seem strong enough despite some silky skills - and he always looks buggered after an hour. Defence did well to limit the chances and Reid showed why having just one centre back playing at a high level can make a huge difference. Really need him to be able to play 90 minutes in the 2nd leg - West Ham can do without him if necessary!
Enjoyed the game for the tension but not the football.

Do you think we can nick it in Lima? My head and heart are saying yes but I have a strong heart and weak head.

I won't repeat comments about the game but we were at the end with most of the action, (i.e., the early Marinovic save, and the near miss from Thomas at the end). Reid was immense and often ended up defending out wide. Peru was disappointing for their ranking.
I thought the atmosphere was much better than at the Bahrain game, mainly because of the Peruvian fans, who contributed to the occasion. I spoke to a few, and many had flown over from Aust.
It was good to visit the Little Beer Quarter and we ended the night at Hashigo Zake.
The return leg will be tough, but if the All Whites can be in the game at HT anything is possible.

Hashigo Zake always reminds me of the pub in Inglourious Basterds, the one where Michael Fassbenders faux pas essentially fucks up the mission for everyone. Awesome beer selection though, you always leave wishing you'd tried just one more.
This is about as good as it gets in terms of contributing to a football thread from me.

Unfortunately Diane Kruger wasn't in there!

Yes, if I didn't have a long drive home I would have stayed longer.

Looks like the South Americans are ramping up the arsehole level

I hope we aren't eating anything we didn't bring with us, just in case Suzie's Peruvian cousin is serving up the breakfast

Looks like the arsehole level has found a way to go up another notch
How confident are we the team bus will even make it to the ground before the gam kicks off?

What a pack of fluffybunnies.
What do you expect from a country who's national animal does nothing but bite and spit?

Careful. Our national animal (bird) does fuck all.

Fixed
So if the All Whites get the qualification over Peru, will they make it safely out of Peru or will their anger be at their team?

Peru's top guns buzz the AW hotel. I hope we beat them to shove all this shit in their faces.
If we win I'd love to see our boys channel their inner Merhts...
But probably not a good idea
