Managed to clear the head this morning while watching the Chiefs game.
Would have loved to have tried a lot more of what was on offer but the problem with these events is that even if you go for small serves (1/3 pint) they soon add up on you.
I usually therefore look for stuff I won't see in shops, festival brews and unusual stuff.I got caught out though when I was looking for a big serve to have with some food (a yummy 16hr smoked brisket) and went to Wild Beer Co. The bloke there talked me into this "Belgian-style Saison with a copious amount of New Zealand hops, freshly harvested Somerset apple juice and wild yeast".
I hadn't noticed it was a 9%er.
Was bloody nice but caught up on me about half an hour later.Generally I found things quite a bit different to the NZ approach. A brewery like Garage Project would have had their heads spinning. Any innovation was more around the use of yeasts than stretching flavour boundaries.

I just picked up a 4 pack of "Lord of the Rings SobeRing Thought" for $4.99 at Fresh Choice. Since it's a 1% alcohol beer I thought this would be indicative that it would be undrinkable and I was quite prepared to tip it down the sink.
But, it's not actually bad - it's a very low alcohol darkish beer, which is a bit different to most of the piss weak options and hence it's got quite a malty flavour.
In my ongoing quest for drinkable low alcohol options it's worth a try. I'll try another one in the build-up tomorrow and see whether it's still any good given that I now have mild expectations.

How's the low alc search going?
I'm curious as I have always seen a big gap in the NZ market for decent lower alc beers.
One thing I have really noticed in the UK is that due to having cask ales there is usually a good option available in the 3-4% range. This means that if you are travelling around and stop at a pub for lunch you can easily have a couple of pints and be under the driving limit.
You don't need to even go much lower than that as most people can process that alc level without it building up and accumulating as long as you aren't slamming it back.
Still, in NZ conditions and high emphasis on drink driving a 2-3% with flavour would be good. -

I live near there - but never heard of it. Will aim to try it out soon.

Not an area I have yet to find myself in. Will keep it in mind though. All recommendations are good.
Just had a look at their website and it is a complete abortion. There's stuff about a hairdressers, stuff about some famous young chef who doesn't actually appear to be cooking there and nothing about being a pub. All very weird.

Garage Project Silk Road Kolsch...very nice, for a 7.5% beer I thought it was great!
McLeods Chili Pils...initially found it pleasant and a nice touch of heat, but I made the mistake of taking too long to drink it while doing dishes and stuff and the last few mouthfuls the chili was overpowering and the chili did what it sometimes does to my body...

@Tim was only after I drank it I looked and realised it was 7.5%.
This chili beer on the other hand, I feel like I ate far too much curry last night 😯

@taniwharugby Yeah, I've had some decent beer from there. Apparently their new head brewer is from 8 Wired.
They did one with a new trial hop from NZ Plant & Food Research that was pretty good.

Nothing particularly new to add to this thread apart from the fact that boofing down something in the region of 18 panhead APAs followed by Red Wine and shots leaves you feeling extremely bloated and hungover. I did this several weeks ago. Pretty rough.
Has anyone else noticed that mainstream beers have all the nutritional guff on the labels nowadays? whilst they're hardly a 'healthy' option they're certainly a damn sight better for you than craft beers. It's no coincidence that craft beer brewers have big sets of moobs to go with the beards.
