    ref Angus Gardner gives valuable service at a time when top refs are so good. He reminds everyone how it used to be in bad old days.

    ... guess who. How surprising

    Walrus? Yeah no surprises. He was extremely quick to have a go at the "we wuz rubbed" crowd after the Crusaders loss. Proves he's no better than the worst fan.

    Aki Seiuli really did a number on Cole, and that doesn't happen often. GPT also seemed to have a big role. Cole has always been a tad vulnerable against under six foot props. Domingo used to own him. Could be interesting to see how Hames goes against him on Saturday. Expect McGrath/Owens and Coles to be kept together as a unit.
    Does Seiuli have any Maori blood?

    For a scrummager, Dan Cole is a helluva turnover merchant.

    He had a valid point in saying is was great that the ref ruled things 'properly', as long as there is such a thing. Where he was patently stupid is saying it was a great reffing performance because the Crusaders were baffled in having to face a ref that interpreted the laws differently to the way they usually experienced.
    That, to me, is poor officiating. Not just by the actual ref but by WR in still not being able to get a consistent approach to the game by what is actually quite a small panel of international refs.
    Having variations in adjudicating to suit the style of game played in different comps is fine. Carrying those differences through to the next level isn't.

    @NTA Indeed, and I also noticed he'd been more savvy thus avoiding the penalties he was prone to in Six Nations. Thought the scrum penalty against him when DLB still on went the wrong way. You know more about it than me: what did you think?

    @pakman mate i didn't see the game.

    But I saw the package on stuff and it brings to the fore just how dumb Coles is in contact - first he was so offside at the maul where the Clan got back to 20.

    And that scrum. Fuck a duck. Everything wrong about Cole's technique: packs too high, doesn't bend his joints, then turns in, almost ignoring the loosehead, and got drilled for it.

    You can do that when you've got a plan to shear left and attack the hooker on the opposition's feed. You can do that when you've sweated a few weeks on the training paddock and in a couple of games with your starting tight five, and even your replacements, when combos are tight.

    But as a replacement THP, with a replacement TH lock behind you, on a tour where its been mix n match combos? Nup. That's when you need your technique right, and as THP on your own feed that means you bend your fucking levers and get as low as possible. Not stick your arse out sideways (poor locking from the second row and openside, mind), and let the loosehead fist you.

    @NTA That scrum totally agree. And point in general. Think GPT's fist was also there! You may not have seen one I was referring to. Cole applies a little downward pressure DLB drops bind and hits deck with Coles still on feet. Penalty Clan. Cue Coles shouting at French touchie. Pot and kettle, mind you!

    That sounds a bit dubious. Depends what had happened before that scrum of course, which can make a ref's mind up unfortunately.

    Late in the game you don't want the ref against you at scrum time. That's when the fun starts.
