i should also said it s bit silly of the government not to actually have that as a clause in their contract, if they win they have to hold it in NZ as long as this funding is also met or something. Sole negotiation rights is a bit weak
First bit is probably a bit tough to enforce regarding the funding. Nice idea though. Yes to the sole negotiating rights. A real give us the money or we bugger off attitude. I know that they need the funds but it doesn't sit well with me as a negotiation in good faith.
It's also bloody rude to take people's money to buy a rugby ball, and then just fuck off with it and not play with the people that bought it.

Here's a novel thought let's stop calling them "Team NZ" maybe "Dalton's Hero's", "Wind Hoe's" "South Something Sails" basically anything but not Team NZ,
if they want NZ's support and $$ but don't think NZ has any value for having the event here! Then maybe it's time we stopped funding them and look back at the good times we have had and smile but move on

This is a key section of the article:
At the council, there's a feeling that the investment in the Cup hasn't been worth it. Back in 2017, when the one and only business case for the event was conducted, MBIE estimated the 2021 America's Cup would add between $0.6 billion and $1b to New Zealand's economy.
By 2019, that cost-benefit ratio was valued at below 1:1 by New Zealand Initiative chief economist Eric Crampton and University of Auckland economics Professor Tim Hazledine.
Post the Covid-19 event, without international tourists and the lucrative superyacht trade, the direct economic losses will undoubtedly be massive when, and if, they are published by MBIE.

@canefan It's easy to circumvent paywalls.
It's a good article, and it's pretty clear to me that the America's Cup spending was a rather irresponsible waste of money, from a government with little interest in industrial development.
It was a pretty damn good party though

Cork would have to a bit of a random choice, not sure locals would consider Ineos as theirs to support
it does look like a cracking harbour from a spectators point of view though

So essentially a neutral venue then?

@canefan unless there is some Irish team out there i havent heard about
i guess there weren't Caribbean teams in Bermuda, cant remember if there were Spanish teams in Valencia
Yeah, was a Spanish team in Valencia.
They spent over $3bn or something on doing the place up (not the team, the authorities).
If they hold this anywhere but AKL I would expect a huge backlash against TNZ.

@tim Haven't read the article but the quote ignores the improvements along the waterfront that would have happened anyway but were brought forward because of the Cup.
So many of the improvements to Auckland's public spaces have been driven by AC and RWC2011. I'm happy that we don't see areal return but instead get quality infrastructure.
What's the ROI on Skypath or almost any public pool, library, museum, most roads ....

Some rich kiwi had come out and said he will bridge the gap between govt offer and the money needed to host the cup in NZ. As long as Team NZ and RNZYS commit to NZ, if the money is there. FFS. Why do these tossers come out with this at the 11Th hour? And the govt offer is now not there, cos it's too late. Would've been nice a few months ago. Sailing twiggy

You've answered your own question.
"Oh... yeah, I'd be willing to spend a fuck-ton of money for this thing that everybody wants and be a hero... oh, it's too late, and I can keep all my lovely money, whilst keeping the hero-rep? That's a shame." -

Cockwomble
(noun) A person, usually male, prone to making outrageously stupid statements and/or inappropriate behaviour while generally having a very high opinion of their own wisdom and importance. -
@machpants but you seemed to use it like it was bad
