I don't think that Bridge is AB quality yet. The way Aumua passed him by pure speed is a worry.
Hooker is another interesting position. Will the AB selectors persit with Harris or will they give the youngsters a chance ? I like what I have seen of Makalio in the Mitre 10 Cup. He's a big unit who can run. His LO throws are a concern, though. No point picking him then, hooker's core role is the second most important position on the field IMO.

@chris-b Not sure it will be a big squad. I think they'll do what they've done in previous years. Pick one or a few players from the Baabaas and Maori ABs teams to join the squad while they are already in Europe. In that light, it's very convenient that Robbie Deans and Scott Robertson will be coaching the Baabaas; no doubt that team will be stacked with NZ players that are close to the AB fringes or have been ABs before.
Isn't the whole idea of arranging this second game in France because they want to take a big squad?
They want to take youngsters/extras this year because the out of window game is v the BaaBaas, with this in mind they then also worked to getting a midweek game arranged.
Can't see it being anything other than a big/bigger squad.

Last year, they initially named a 36 man squad (20 forwards, 16 backs). That was before Romano left the squad and not including Scott Barrett, Vaea Fifita and apprentice Jordie Barrett.
This year:
*The All Blacks will take 37 players on the northern hemisphere tour. There will be no need to take an apprentice this time. "The last spots are always difficult, we're always open to change, to any mind boggling inspirational thought late in the piece," Hansen said.

@cgrant Can't really see Makalio being in the frame. He was clearly third choice at the Crusaders. He's a big unit and scrums well and carries well, but lacks a bit in mobility. Edit: I don't think his lineout throwing is too bad - a challenge is that Ta$man is lacking in tall targets, other than Parkinson.
@Tregaskis 37 is a big squad for a five match tour - when you consider RWC squads are only 31 for hopefully 7 tests.

Bridge should not be in the conversation. I still have nightmares about his dropsies against the BIL.
A lot of our boys didn’t play well in that match including Havili and he still made the ABs.
Not that I think Bridge is ready yet, but his utility value would be attractive.
You just never know. Havili wouldn’t be there if Smith didn’t have a sabbatical, Dagg and Jordie weren’t injured.
I think Tamanivalu would come into the equation before Bridge is considered.
You're right about the Crusaders VS the Lions. Richie may actually have been the worst of them, but he's well and truly in the AB frame now. Same could apply to Bridge. I think Seta's time has come and gone and he didn't come up to scratch. In saying that though, I'd heard the selectors didn't want to pick Fekitoa again but he got a look-in again after a few injuries.

Seta's still just 25 and has had about an hour in the AB jersey at centre. I think they'd be open to giving him a run on the wing, but as a "power" winger (as opposed to a 2nd fullback) and for now he's behind Ioane, Naholo and maybe Savea in that role.
But he's 108kg of blockbusting wing, which doesn't grow on trees even if he's still got some rough edges to plane.
-
@Chris-B I reckon Savea has done his dash.
-
@act-crusader yep, he should be dominating Mitre 10 cup, but he probably isnt even in the best few players in the Wellington team.
-
@act-crusader Me too.
But, Hansen gave him a Lions' start, so no evidence that Seta has jumped over him - though, in my mind he has.

I think they looked at experience for the lions. Error free footy was the target (but he didn't deliver). The EOYT has an eye to the RWC, so you probably won't see Savea.

What's happened to Melani Nanai? Is he actually playing for Auckland or is he injured or something? There were times in the last 18 months or so that he looked like a future AB fullback.
He actually has been pretty good since returning from injury for Auckland but not yet at his best form. Needs more rugby which he isnt going to get this year.

Indeed. He plays one position at international level: starting left wing. If he ain't starting, he ain't selected.
Ioane has been better than I expected, he's undroppable at the moment. The ABs hardly ever take 2 specialist 11s.
Savea must regret his long-term deal, I reckon he might even be given compassionate release. He would coin it in France especially I would think, they love a big Polynesian weapon on the wing.

Initial thoughts.
Given the number out in back three (BFA/Dagg/NMS/Barrett (J)) and loss of Franks (O)/Moody I suspect 21 forwards and 16 backs.
Three hookers and five locks pick themselves. I expect six props, with Moli in team proper: not sure how he's traveled in Mitre 10 after foot injury healed. LH back up is wide open, with Tim Perry mentioned and Manu still around, albeit seems to be off boil. That leaves seven loosies. Cane/Savea (A)/Squire/Kaino/Fifita/Read seem certs, which leaves a straight choice between Todd, who's certainly done whatever asked of him, or Ioane (A), who's the man for the future.
In backs more open. Will TKB get send off? For me better to develop. Weber was in mix previously, but seems a big drop after top three. Is Dmac taken as third first five, or does Mo'unga get the French BaaBaa's game? Too early, but I like the look of Perofeta. Ioane (R)/Haveli/Naholo locked in. Savea (J) played versus Lions, so would be obvious choice. Think Seta T has been disgarded. Big chance for a bolter.
Midfield is the real area which needs strengthening. I'd take seven first fives/back threes, which would allow six in midfield. Four incumbents, to which I'd add Ngatai (who CAN pass) and Goodhue.
