Black Caps v Pakistan

why declare? Pakistan haven't batted a full day in the series. Take the loss out of the picture (we are 1-0 up in the series) and back ourselves to take 10 wickets tomorrow.
-
Well, I've got no idea what they're doing - aside from waiting for Rossco to get his hundred.
Watling making no effort whatsoever to push the scoring along - he's batting for a draw with 5 off 31.
Doull has some half-arsed theory that they think they already have enough runs and just want Ross to get his hundred. If that's the case and BJ is just there playing for his average, why didn't they send someone like Southee or Wagner out there, who don't need to worry about their averages?
Styris making more sense and saying get on with it.

If BJ (Southee!!!) had gone at run a ball, we'd be 380 ahead now and that's the loss pretty much taken out of the picture - and still some time for Rossco to get his hundred and get the lead over 400.
They're just fucking about!
-
Pushing the game along is such and Australian thing to say. Do we really want to be taking lessons from them right now?
-
Ton number 16. Incredible record (by NZ standards). Poor run of form recently but he's one of our very best, pleased to see him back in the runs.
And we declare to give ourselves a few overs at them tonight.

If they have enough, you declare. If Taylor is on 26, 96 or 296 it shouldn't matter.
Great hundred from him, however. Batted at a good rate and played confident cricket.

Seemed to me like we were taking lessons from Todd Blackadder - falling asleep at the wheel!!!

There will be 98 overs max tomorrow and maybe 3-4 tonight. Pakistan need 369 off 102 overs to win. I can't see that happening. Watling could have batted more quickly and we could have set them a few more and given us a few more overs.
I don't think Pakistan will even have a go at that total.

I don't mind them waiting two or three overs to let someone get a hundred - those statistics are important in assessing someone's career and can help build confidence for the future.
I simply can't understand what Watling was doing - given CDG went out there and smashed it and Rossco was batting urgently.

I agree.. roscoe has had a lean run.. it's good to give him some time and build confidence for the summer ahead.. also helps roscoe get one more closer to our national test ton record

Bad declaration imo.

The only times a team has scored more than 369 in the 4th innings in New Zealand ere both by New Zealand against England and both were lost. There was the famous Astle double century test in 2002. Then there was Southee's debut test in Napier where he also went crazy. The best score by a foreign team was India's 366 in Auckland in early 2014. The highest successful chase was by the West Indies in Auckland in 1965. They chased down 348 to win. We have also chased down plus 300 vs Pakistan in 1994 and England have done it to us. Both of those latter two games were in Christchurch.
-
@hydro11 Yeah - I'm pretty doubtful that Pakistan will get close - and they probably won't be trying - at least initially. But if they can get well past lunch with no more than a couple of wickets down, they'll doubtless re-assess the prospects and balance of drawing the series compared with not losing the test - and think about having a bit of a slog for a while.

How's the pitch playing? If Rosco got a ton I'm assuming it has settled into being a good batting track
Yes it is a bit easier to bat on now. Still a bit there for the bowlers with the new ball but as Latham showed, if your defence is solid early on then there are runs to be made.
-
No problem with the weather tomorrow and there should be some cloud cover around to assist the bowlers. Henry must be due some luck.

Wagner will make life uncomfortable for the batters
Yup, no major demons in the pitch but it's far from a road, some variable bounce at times which Wagner will exploit. Will take a huge effort from Pakistan to save this game.
