@taniwharugby You're right. Most squads seemed to include club and school players, who didn't play Mitre 10 Cup. For Mitre 10 Cup teams with a lot of All Blacks, Maori All Blacks, All Black 7s or Super Rugby players that's unavoidable. I wonder whether any of the All Blacks 7s players will be released to play the Nationals? The Nationals are 2 weeks before the Wellington 7s.

@Stargazer other thing is, most of our guys are the ones involved in our team last year too, so looks like a vehicle for keeping these guys involved and fit as much as anything.

As I hoped, All Blacks 7s players have been released to play at the Nationals (assuming not only Waikato get their AB7s back):
Success at the tournament, played at Memorial Park in Cambridge on Sunday, means the Mooloos qualified for nationals as the region's top seed, with co-coach Roger Randle revealing they will have New Zealand sevens stars - Tim Mikkelson, DJ Collier and Isaac Te Tamaki - available for the tournament in Rotorua on January 14-15. Former All Black Zac Guildford and Waikato Mitre 10 Cup winger Sevu Reece impressed - the latter finishing as the tournament's top scorer (7) - but co-coach Roger Randle praised the efforts of each member of his 12-man squad, who went unbeaten throughout the competition -

He was very good on Sunday, especially in combo with Reece. I don't know enough about 7s, particularly which players play at which positions in the NZ team, so I wouldn't know who he would replace if he was picked for the team.
Edit: ZG was wearing the 6 jersey for Waikato.

This Saturday, 17 December, the inaugural World Schools Sevens will be played at Sacred Heart College with six teams in the boys division and four in the girls division. The tournament will be televised on Sky Sport 1, from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM and until 5.30PM (?) on the Rugby Channel.

Canterbury is organising a South Island 7s tournament in Christchurch, tomorrow, as preparation for the National 7s in January.

World school 7s? I guess it's more worldly than the baseball world series.

@antipodean I assume the idea is to attract teams from more countries in the future. This is only the first time this tournament is being played. At the moment it's more an Oceania School Sevens.
Edit: most of these kids live, go to school & play in NZ, anyway. "World" may be an ambition, but whether it's realistic? Or maybe they want to become a sevens equivalent to the Sanix World Rugby Schools Tournament?

I watched most of the games today - it was pretty good. I was really impressed with the skill levels and physicality of the girls teams

It was a pilot event with the intention it will be the real deal next year. Originally the US, Fijians and Sri Lankan Unions were to send their full boys and girls sides but the lead-in time was ultimately too short. NZR have also given it their blessing but didn't have enough time to fully sanction their own selections.
In addition to those unions, England, Wales and Japan have asked to be included on next year's plans.
Most likely there will be events on successive weekends with two North Island provincial unions keen to host either tournament.

Player Of The Tournament Siave Togoiu is some talent. He's a leaguie though and will likely stay in that code. Playing for Southern Cross Campus in 1B isn't going to see you fall in love with Union. But geez he's electric: ankle-breaking footwork, decent pace and one of those players that's never really tackled.
A shame the Warriors withdraw Etene Nanai from the NZ team. They're obviously getting very nervous about the Chiefs looking into a way to break his U20s contract. Apparently they're wanting Nanai to flag his final year at St Kents and will offer him a full NRL contract to train full time with the Warriors.

Popped along to the World sevens tournament yesterday at sacred heart college,Siave Togoiu was sensational,his acceleration,not to mention his left foot step is sensational,this kid in my opinion would be a waste in league,in the same way we see,someone like Tuavasa Sheck,used as a bring the ball back battering ram,can you imagine Sheck given space on the outside channels in union,where tries can be scored anywhere on the paddock..?,can see Togoiu doing the same thing..going to the Warriors is hardly pre requisit to successful career choice for a young footballer..! -
