@taniwharugby and for someone who isn't a regular feature in the 23, it's even worse because they are the guys that are at most risk of losing their spot in the squad.

According to this article on Stuff:
... big lock Brodie Retallick is set to rejoin them in Italy and centre Seta Tamanivalu has been called up as a midfield reinforcement.
But Retallick will be in Italy to bolster the All Blacks pack and, with the lineout a shambles against Ireland, the Chiefs stalwart could be in line to start in Rome next weekend. Tamanivalu has been called after George Moala was forced out with an elbow injury, NZ Newswire reported. Crusaders recruit Tamanivalu, 24, who played for the Barbarians in their 31-31 draw with South Africa in London at the weekend, will join the side ahead of their match against Italy in Rome. He has played three tests. Moala, who pulled the ligaments off his elbow in the 40-29 loss to Ireland in Chicago, would return to New Zealand. Second five-eighth Ryan Crotty, who strained his hamstring during the match, would stay with the team and be assessed over the coming weeks in the hope he would be available for the the final test of the tour against France, on November 26.

"Moala pulled the ligaments and tendons off his elbow and won't not need an operation."
Not just the rugby team but the media/editing department is having a mare also...

So he does need an op? ...

Just reading through the Blues woes of injuries and last year the Chiefs with all the early season injuries, can any of this be put down to training and playing on rock hard surfaces for too long.
They would have been training all through Dec and Jan on essentially concrete.
Perhaps if they started the season later, you know, after the cricket season that SA, Oz and NZ play maybe there maybe fewer injuries?
Perhaps not and it's just coincidence.

I think it's not that related. They don't play or train on rokc hard grounds any more - Eden Park (for instance) has a world class surface.
Rugby just doesn't lend itself to the bulking up that has come with professionalism. The impacts get so much bigger that tendons and ligaments seem to be the things that get mashed.

I don't disagree and I think I more referring to what they are training on.

@Hooroo possibly due to the fact these guys are training/playing much longer?
Which is why they are also trying to manage workloads as well I guess?
Absolutely. Off season is short, and you get cumulative year on year load as well. If you play internationals, hardly any time to rest and recover.
I think we need to reduce the number of subs and speed the game up so the players can't maintain the bulk as well. Make fitness more of a factor, and reduce the impact of the collisions.
Remember when 120kg + players were rare?

I've said that for years and I'm certainly not the Lone Ranger there. The hilarious part of increasing the bench size was the current state of rugby was perfectly predictable. The law of unintended consequence.
Players no longer tire adequately, defences don't break down. Keep the ball in play more across the 80mins and they'd have to be fitter, which means smaller.

Yep, I blame the South Africans when they started faking injuries to use their subs.

throw in the break for scrums. the break for the TMO, the break for lineouts. There are a lot of opportunities for pro athletes with elite fitness levels to grab a breath. Then you get to sub half of your team.

There were two black marks against Mains in that incident. Cheating during a Lions Test and being stupid enough to pick Cooksley in the first place
