Really? I understand Smith's actions and think his explanation rings pretty true.
He's in one of the most pressure-filled situations in world sport, a 4th innings chase in a test match in India. Gets an LBW call, and in the heat of the moment he forgets the rules around looking to the dressing rooms in that situation.
This fiendish Aussie tactic was detected in literally two seconds, and he's sent on his way.
I think you will know that I'm no Aussie basher and actually enjoy watching your lads play but I don't think for a second that it was a mistake. He is been a pro bat for too long in the big time to know what he is doing out there.
In saying that, are the Indians cheating when they look towards the sky for help?
-
Oh I think he meant to look at the dressing room, but it was 100% a brain fade. It had to be - it's a really dumb thing to do and he did it in such an obvious fashion (turning his full body to face the sheds) that everyone picked it up instantly.
I think this whole saga is a sad distraction to what was an epic game of cricket, and frankly I think Kohli is even more of a dick for making a scene post-game.
-
I think the situation is exactly as it reads.
Smith gets out, consults his team mate who says he's not sure. At this point, Steve Smith can be almost 100% sure that if he's out, they lose. So has a brain fade and looks to the dressing room. Immediately, the umpire spots this and says can't do that, Smith comes to his senses and walks off without reviewing, realising that it's not an option to do this anymore, even if he thinks he should.
Kohli then makes a massive deal out of it (rightly), which means that in half a second, the entire journalistic world of Indian cricket goes absolutely fucking mental over it.
It is what it is. If your going to have a brain fade, don't do it in India.

Kohli is going to have an interesting time on his next tour here. Might help ticket sales.
You mean the aussie crowds might be quite hostile to him? Which would be different to every other time he's toured how? Its like saying Quade Cooper might cop a few shouts at Eden Park or if Hadlee toured Aussie now they'd think up some chants for him.

Mitch Marsh's scores in this series have actually been OKish, in a low scoring series. Not drop worthy in isolation.
It's the fact he wickets are so bowler friendly that really put his spot in jeopardy. His expected required overs on a flat batting decks just isn't a reality at the moment, and I've been really impressed with his bowling at times in test cricket. When he pitches up and looks for reverse on a pitch that's getting a bit tired he is really useful. Drys up runs and is a wicket taking threat (an almost perfect bowling replacement for late career Watson)
-
@Rapido He's been pretty shit for a specialist batsman. I'd say he's in the Ronchi room at the moment - in the team because none of the other options are convincing.
Though, actually, I see he now has a shoulder injury and has been replaced in the squad by Stoinis.
Steve Smith, "Fucking....Mark...Fucking...Waugh...won't...be ....giving you...another...chance...after....THIS!!!"
Warner, "Shall I give him a kick in the head for good measure, Skip".
Smith, "Why not?!!!"
-
Yeah, not denying he isn't good enough and shouldn't be there for his primary role.
Just that in a series where Aus have been surprisingly good, what has changed now?
And another bits and pieces player isn't really going to fix this (stoinus, maxwell).
They need a specialist bat 6.
-
@Rapido That link I included is to this series averages - he's averaging 12, which is 8 behind the next worst specialist bat (Handscombe). If someone was to be dropped it would surely be him.
Agree on the replacement - they should probably stick Khawaja in at six. Smith can roll his arm over if the bowlers need a rest.

I just can't help but sympathise with the batsman. If you antagonise like that, expect a toweling!!
