Waikato v Canterbury (Ranfurly Shield game)
-
Whilst I'd love for Canterbury to win the Ranfurly Shield, I don't want it to become a distraction for the team. And truth be told, if I had to choose between winning the Ranfurly Shield and winning this Mitre 10 Cup, I'd take the latter every time. That's what will maintain Canterbury's culture of excellence and attract the best young talent to our academy. And that's what will earn players Super Rugby contracts, whether for the Crusaders or one of the other franchises.

Looking at the Canterbury squad for the game v Waikato, they really want the Shield. This looks like the strongest possible team they can field at the moment:

- Scott Barrett
- Dominic Bird
- Reed Prinsep
- Jed Brown
- Luke Whitelock (c)
- Ere Enari
- Richie Mo'unga
- Nathan Earle
- Jordie Barrett
- Jack Goodhue
- Marshall Suckling
- Johnny McNicholl
Reserves:
16. Nathan Vella
17. Daniel Lienert-Brown
18. Oli Jager
19. David McDuling
20. Billy Harmon
21. Alby Mathewson
22. Inga Finau
23. Ben Volavola -
Waikato 13+ $13
Waikato 1-12 $5
Draw $26
Canterbury 1-12 $2.85

looking forward to the slow journey to the game.. joy.
if we lose it will be a sh*t arvo!

Dammit. Knew this was going to happen, but still bloody frustrating to see the Mooloos lose the Shield to Canterbury. A Shield challenge on 8 October could maybe have lifted the Magpies a bit in this very frustrating season.
I wonder how long it is going to take for the Shield to change hands again? This Canterbury team is so hard to beat. Who's going to do it? Doubt it will be Harbour, so we'll have to wait until next year's draw comes out to discover who will get a shot at it.
-
Hmm it could stay in Chch for a very long time. Can't see it leaving anytime soon.
-
Stop yer whinging jealous pig islanders, a fucking fantastic result. Being hard to win is the entire point of the shield, if you want it to change hands every week than why don't you make your own shitty trophy just for your flaky inconsistent shithouse amateurs.
The first time the shield's been home in my sons' lifetime, when's the parade?

Great game i thought. Some really good tries. There are some really promising players running around that will be making the step up to Super rugby next year. J Barrett, Trainor, Goodhue etc. first time ive see Trainor play. Is he with the chiefs next year? Will be interesting to see what they do with Dmac, Cruden and Trainor. With Webber the have their fair share of skinny/mini white fellas. Does Trainor play any positions other than 15?
Thought the penalty against Barrett for the tackle without the ball was a bit rough. Thought you were able to tackle some who has 'bobbled' the ball. Tackle wasn't dangerous either.
The two Waikato wingers looked promising too. Lots of pace.

It's HOOOOOMMMMEEE.
Been a long time.
Congrats to Waikato, they played well and showed excellent endeavour.
Was good to see the young Cantabs step up away from home.

Pretty good game that one. Waikato certainly didn't roll over and let the Cantabs take it off them. The problem was that at 23-23 when they had momentum, they didn't do anything right. Canterbury kick penalty to take the lead, Christie puts kickoff straight into touch, Canterbury kick penalty, Christie puts the kickoff dead - once is bad, twice is giving the game away.
