@Tim Nic White might be on the outside looking in if he doesn't have a big season.

@KiwiMurph Is Schmidt impressed by soccer dives? Aimless kicking? Otherwise he's shit out of luck.

@KiwiMurph How do you owe $6M to board members?

    Did some provide personal loans?

That's absolute fuckery, if true. You're on the Board to ensure things run smoothly. Popping your own cash into the venture creates a massive conflict of interest.

Just about to say that. Competence is low from the top down if the board, the fucking board, loaned them money!!

The NRL announced an operating surplus of $58.2 million after generating more than $700m revenue from a season in which TV viewers, attendances and participation figures were all up.

    It's fucking ridiculous.

Even if RA were able to supply funding at pre-COVID levels, it wouldn't have covered the bills the rebels racked up.

Club volunteers all over the country must be wondering what the fuck is happening, and why the fuck they're bothering to support a code that has run off the rails so spectacularly

How in the fuck does one team rack up debts that amount to 75% of the national broadcast revenue? That kind of figure blows the "this is because the ARU weren't paying us enough" out the window, because it looks a lot like they were living waaaay beyond their means.

Rugby in Australia apparently needs to get past the notion that it's competing with the NRL and the AFL, and realise it's actually competing with the A-League (who, incidentally, get $10m more a year out of their broadcast deal). A niche domestic sport with a strong international presence.

Actually, speaking of the NRL, all this shit makes the decision to pay Joseph Sua'ali'i $1.5m a year (or 5% of the annual broadcast revenue) not only stupid, but criminally negligent.

and a sport that has managed to grow to 3 professional teams in melbourne, thats better than the NRL has even managed...but they have also kept it small and well connected to the metro club scene

and south melbourne always waiting in the wings to join the A League

I agree, but I'm not sure how much of that 1.5 mill is third party deals

Speaks volumes when those third party deals would be better as general sponsorship. Getting Sua'ali'i doesn't fix the problems at SR level.
