as usual the first week of trade week has been absolute snooze

that finally perked up today because West Coast did something really dumb. A three-way trade, West Coast gave up pick 3, to get Owies from Carlton, Baker from Richmond, and pick 12. Carlton get pick 3 for pick 12 and a player they were looking to delist. Richmond get pick 14 for Baker, a player out of contract they probably could have got for a packet of chips.

While i am not one who is as high on draft picks as some, because you absolutely don't know what you are going to get out of an 18 year old, this is still an incredibly stupid trade by West Coast. Yes Baker and Owies probably improve their team next year, but neither move the needle on them moving towards success. Pick 3 is much more likely to do that.

Carlton, fucking Carlton, have made out like bandits. Why do organisations keep doing these fluffybunnies favours? Richmond will be hitting this draft hard.

Yeah it's pretty savvy from Carlton. But some people are celebrating as if they've won the flag. You've still got to draft the right kid, bring him in etc. Looking at the history of pick 3 there are certainly some stars (Dusty, Judd) but plenty of fizzers too (including the last time Carlton had 3 and took Paddy Dow).

But hey I suppose it's mildly entertaining, which is all you need at this time of year.

i have seen a few articles around "fixing" the trade period, because bugger all happens.

As far as the AFL is concerned, this is perfect. Nothing is happening, and yet the AFL is the only story in town. Maybe if people cared about rugby the current ARU/Rebels shitfight might get some airwaves, but nope, it's all trade chat.

Cricket Australia released their squads for the summer and there was still more chat around what it will take to get Houston out of Port. And we're not even talking about the bloody draft yet (except for who will bid for Ashcroft to force the Lions in to parting with a bit more).

Australia play Tonga on Friday and i have seen nothing about it. The AFL is playing a blinder.

Yeah I agree. This is always a dead zone for sports and the trade period is like the Brownlow - the stupidity is it genius. AFLW is happening but that can be hit and miss as far as viewing goes.

The Hayne stuff is pretty gross, but is a 9/11 joke considered offensive these days? It's a little edgy but I don't have a problem with it...

@barbarian think i would have thought at least some people will always find it unfunny...not sure i really get how you can make it funny, think i would been looking on with a confused face, there also the dango unchained slavery bit, some people will see it as just part of a movie and some will see slavery

the think i was thinking about, this is behind closed doors is my understanding, not in a bar or anything, so someone for the team has reported it

Four weeks for a bad taste joke behind closed doors at a players only "function"?

You get four weeks for concussing an unsuspecting player away from the ball.

This is ridiculous from the AFL.

Jordan De Goey was arrested in New York, managed to plead down his assault charge, and only copped an internal suspension which Collingwood reversed as soon as they could, and he didn't miss a game.

@Kiwiwomble it's public because Tom Morris (you hypercritical little fucking germ) got wind of it and leaked it pice by pice to drum up maximum clicks.

The story doing the rounds was it was a bartender that reported it. If it was you can kiss that pub goodbye for future AFL club functions.

@mariner4life Not to mention if someone racked up a line of Colombia’s finest while the offensive skit took place they’d be entitled to confidentiality and privacy as they received support from the AFL!

What a ridiculous beat up. And now the captain is responsible for the moral guidance of other adults. The AFL's priorities are a joke.

i dont actually disagree with the captain taking some responsibility for the actions of his team at a team function, im responsible for making sure my team get home safe etc if its a work thing and dont bring the company into distribute, we had team leads fired several years ago when they hosted a team function in a bar that ended with things getting broken and some fighting

captain sets the cultural tone for a team so if they're all copping punishment for actions he endorsed then i dont think its out of line

You're conflating very different things. You're even getting the general legal obligations of an employer confused with worker's compensation for private travel. Worse still, imposing yourself by the provision of employer provided travel comes with a duty of care beyond an injury sustained during travel sufficiently connected to the employment.

It appears the AFL through Dillon has decided to set the cultural tone for the club. Endorsement requires positive actions, which is vastly different to moral judgements and reading the room. Particularly in a private event where nothing illegal happens.

@antipodean i wasn't actually talking legal obligation re making sur people get home, more general leadership, if i arrange a function then im going to make sure everyone is safe, and that extends to not allowing anything to happen that would make anyone else in the team or even witnessing it to feel uncomfortable

every contract ive ever signed has clauses re company values or the like, shouldnt be a surprise to any grown adult when theyre imposed

@Kiwiwomble I'm surprised that you can't see a clear difference between general professional office behaviour and that of only professional players behind closed doors at a private function. Where I might add none of them appeared to do anything illegal, just some jokes the pearl-clutchers are predictably offended about.

i explained im not talking illegal and im not talking "office behaviour" but its clear we're on different pages so im moving on because as many times as we've butted heads i feel i've "liked" a lot more of your posts than we've disagreed and so i dont want to kept arguing until i feel i need to block

John Longmire set to quit the Swans. Real shock. Wonder how much the GF took a toll on him, or this was something he had planned all along...

just came here to post this

was just talking to someone about it and i hope its his call rather than being given a push. I dont think the coach should really be blamed for the GF loss, the squad he put together and that ran out was more than capable of winning, none of the big guns turned up
