He’s not exactly in vintage form either. Then again he does justify his spot more than Southee, especially with how his opening partner has gone of late.

Mitchell is more ‘new blood’ which I think the team needs

@MN5 I want someone with tactical nous, not the current 'paint by numbers'. Southee's issue is he is a bowler. IT's damn hard to both bowl and captain at the same time. My strong preference is therefore a batsman - not bothered who that is.

Feels likeLatham actually has a skillset to both bat and then captain. But then again it looks like a new keeper may be needed soon too... we're really at the changing of the guard.

So yeah, Mitchell, Latham - whoever's got a decent cricketing brain!

Yeah the thought of Southee leading the team in three matches against India is fucken ugly.

But he’s probably set until at least the home summer despite the results.

I’m a fan of Southee, at his best he was terrific particularly alongside Wags and Boult but he’s gone on too long. My guess is he wants 400 test wickets ? At this rate that could take him years !

If India win 3-0 which is very likely they will be totally justified in not giving a crap team like us another three test series in the future too.

Be one of the first names on team sheet at the moment.

Not sure if his personality type would be really good, or really dire. He's certainly enthusiastic. Bat, bowl and captain though? Tough ask.

Problem with Mitchell is it could be Southee all over again... not sure a team in need of invigoration should be turning to a 33 year old.

Latham? He is 32, so hardly inspiring either though I think he probably has a good 4-5 years in him... but his captaincy record thus far leaves a lot to be desired.

Phillips? Not sure I would want to burden him with the captaincy, and furthermore, there is nothing about him which suggests captain.

I think the long-term option could be Ravindra?

Based on no other options ( assuming you rule out a horribly out of form Conway, Blundell and the terminally not up to it Santner ) you could be right

40/3 and unfortunately the man out early wasn’t the night watchman, it was our best batsman.

MASSIVE score needed by Ravindra or Mitchell just to make them bat again. Fuck this is awful stuff

……and this post aged poorly. 40/4 now with Ravindra gone.

Poor old Ajaz Patel faced with holding the innings together after a massive bowling stint in the first couple of days

If you’re Sri Lanka what do you do ?

Enforcing the follow on doesn’t seem to be the done thing in cricket these days. How’s the weather looking ?

Their bowlers have barely turned their arms over to reduce us to 55/7 so fatigue shouldn’t be a factor.

It’s depressing to say but every member of our XI has been varying degrees of utter shithouse so far this test.

Splitting hairs probably, but I’ve often found the idea of a night watchman a bit weird.

Someone is in the team as a specialist batsman, in some situations he will find himself needing to bat for a few niggly overs at the end of the day. I think it’s rough they get a guy who has bowled 41 thankless overs padded up and sent out to “protect” him.

Jason Gillespie will definitely disagree with this though.

Though it's not clear to me that there's any difference between our top order batsmen and our night watchmen...

    Haha, was just thinking that.

Flipside of that is that they could have gotten Latham, Conway etc to send down lots of innocuous pies for the Sri Lankans to rack up a cheeky six hundy for five declared…..
