By the narrowest of margins, ex-Brumbies captain Brett Robinson has been voted in as the new chair of World Rugby; the first person from the Southern Hemisphere to hold the role.

Interestingly Benazzi, who is Morrocan, pushed very hard on the 'expanding the game world wide' angle - working on his non big nation background. So that has a lot of appeal. But I think that Robinson pushed more on the 'sort out what we have got' angle, including 'spectacle/watchability' and financial stability. With the mess so many Unions and Clubs are ATM I think getting the house in order is a greater priority than 'spreading the game'. Spreading the game costs money that rugby doesn't really have, outside France and corporate backed Japanese clubs

Honestly wouldn't have minded Benazzi, for whatever reason I think he's less likely to be captured by the establishment (perhaps because he is Moroccan) but am pleased Robinson got it.
In all honesty I reckon they missed a trick with Pichot.
This does beg the question as to how many Tests the All Blacks will be playing in Montevideo, Vancouver and Tblisi now to pay for the votes ...

the battle of the football codes is probably more instense in australia than in any other country, so i think he knows what he has to do to move the game forward
just a question of whether he can cast some of the dinosaur stuff aside and actually do it
tough jobliked benazzi as a player, but in this position, he'd be a claytons frenchman
if they were going to go that way, pichot would have been the man, liked him as a player too -

House in order is the best approach while getting the game right that will appeal to non rugby countries as well as keeping the game a spectacle and part of the fabric of traditional rugby countries.

@booboo I am pleasantly surprised by this. Hopefully we will see a bit of change in how the game is run with the players coming first, then fans second, much more common sense and the sandwiches and warm beer brigand having to accept some long overdue changes.
The game has been run by well-meaning reactionaries for too long.

he had a match winning try disallowed in WC95 semi vs SA
monsoon game, he definitely scored imo
no tmo in those days
would have meant a NZ v france final, and whole different rugby history
i wasn't concerned at the time, thought we were easily good enough to beat anyone -
I read that Benazzi didn't get the Rugby Africa votes, so his Moroccan ancestry didn't help.

Kruger didn't score ... it's not on the score sheet ...
As for Benazzi, agree it was not "clear and obvious". I recall he talked about it afterward (press conference?) and kind of played it down. Said something like "it was 'this' close".
