    I remember walking around in Barcelona at all hours years ago, then found out it was apparently one of the crime capitals of Spain

    Coming in from a point of no education here, but it does make sense to move it around.

    Yes, they've attracted a lot of money, visitors and teams into NZ, but how mucho f that is going to come back 3 years later? The teams will, obviously, but the flotilla of super yachts / fans etc? Hard to tell. NZ is incredibly difficult to get to & if you were there just 3 years ago, would you be in a hurry to get back there so soon?

    Kind of like a rugby world cup. If it was held in NZ in 2015 again, would it have been as big of a success as the UK? Or would people be looking at it thinking, long way to go, only went there recently, will skip this.

    Looking at the last 4, it's' been Valencia, San Fran, Bermuda, Auckland ... what an awesome set of locations and keeps the vibe alive. If it was NZ again, would that same vibe exists with it being in Barcelona this time?

    I have my doubts. Would you rather pop across to Spain for the next one is do the long journey to NZ, again. For basically exactly the same thing.

    Bit of a no brainer for me.

    @dogmeat

    If the return was to be realised in the next defence of the cup (assuming we won 2021), why the fuxk didn’t the have it contractually binding that the funding is subject to hosting in 2024 if they successfully hosted in 2021?

    Fuxk all places they could have gone in 2021 to host the Americas cup

    It just seems amateurish to have the payoff in the next hosting round but we aren’t going to ensure that the defender is contractually obliged to defend it in auckland

    Valencia was through necessity because the America's Cup must be a held on an ocean sea course. San Fran was because the Golden Gate Yacht Club was the defender, Bermuda because its a tax haven, and Auckland because ETNZ won through the RNZYS.

    Much better racing today, good to see ETNZ come from behind to win, of course, race wins mean nothing for them, just trialing their boat.

    @LatsToTheMax

    That was outstanding the way they took the lead against Luna Rossa.

    The big problem with these boats seems that whoever gets in front seems to build a big lead and it’s just a procession.

    Hopefully by the time the LV finals start we should see close high quality racing

    @MajorRage remember you're after the seriously wealthy now, not Fern posters. They went back to American yacht clubs every cycle, so why not?

    That’s exactly my point.

    Did the seriously wealthy want to return after 3 years?

    Very different going to diff spots in America than Auckland.

    Just speculating. I have no idea.

    Bit of an issue here…

    UPDATED STATEMENT FROM EMIRATES TEAM NEW ZEALAND:

    UPDATED STATEMENT FROM EMIRATES TEAM NEW ZEALAND:

    After racing on Race day one of the Louis Vuitton Round Robin, as the team were lifting their AC75 ‘Taihoro’ from the water, there was an issue with the lift and the boat landed heavily onto its supporting cradle.

    Will miss tomorrow racing as a minimum

    some challengers also said they wouldnt come back to NZ, more expensive to get to/set up base and they could get more/better sponsors if held in a European city

    Yeah is a bit shit. They had 9 days of racing the challengers before they had to go it alone. Now maybe down to 5-6. Not ideal.
