The Olympics should not be an RnD competition. Any equipment which has a direct influence on winning and losing, such as yachts kayaks rowing boats and cycles should all be standardised
Running shoes...
They have regulations for those.

Yes but they have regulations for bikes, boats, and the other things you mention. Regulations limit tech winning, they don't stop it. What shoe you wear is a big thing in running, same as what bike you use in cycling

Right, I wasn't aware how wide the regulations are for cycles, and the earlier talk suggested that the Brits for example were riding considerably more advanced bikes than us

Bah, not really mate. First, the difference in tech between the top 20 available running shoes is now very marginal. Second, it’s all available to buy and the cost is fuck all compared to a bike/boat.
Unless you’ve contracted yourself to Jordache, you’re probably gonna be ok

Whats more, each country does not have to spend their own money on RnD for shoes. I would expect all the top athletes get given pairs of shoes as part of their sponsorship deals too

Very curious about what Duplantis clears in training - given how consistently he pushes the record up I reckon he's clearing quite a bit higher in training but obviously trying to maximise payouts for new world records.
It's the Sergey Bubka method - he pushed it the world record up from 5.94 to 6.14 over the course of a decade, the last 10cm at a cm a time. If there is a financial reward for a record, why go for your maximum.
