Ryan, I think, is very under qualified. He's the under 20's scrum coach, and anyone who watched that tournament will agree our scrum was nothing short of abysmal.

Given the head coach is now decided....I'd like Leon MacDonald as an assistant. Colin Cooper maybe as forwards coach?

But I'm picking they'll go with Ryan and Philpott

I hope the Chiefs pick Keane and not Schmidt (can't stand that guy). Cooper could be a good addition to the Chiefs as well considering the Naki is part of the region.

Please take Philpott off our hands! We'll throw Chris Eaton in to mentor your 9s as a bonus.

Yep, we should have nabbed Keane one of the many times he told riach he wanted to be involved. From what I hear his parting shots at Riach were more than justified :)

Philpott was a favourite player of mine when I was a young fella, was a one of the hard men in the Sydenham pack when I was playing u10/11s etc at the same club. But sentiment aside, I hope we are looking at better candidates.

I'd think the odds of getting Leon are pretty slim. He turned down the Asst. Coach job previously, presumably because he was tapped for the Mako$ Head Coach role. If I were him I'd do 2-3 seasons there and then look to grab a Super Head Coach role.

The ideal would be to have Robbie come in as a sort of mentoring assistant role, similar to Wayne Smith and Plumtree - can't see that happening, but maybe Cotter?

Yeah I'm hoping he turned the job down because he could see the sinking ship Blackadder was in charge of. But you're right, probably wishful thinking on my behalf

I wish robbie would come home. However unlikely it now seems.

Yup, and they've kept Brad Mooar on who had a really positive influence this season. Coupled with Razor's penchant for flinging the ball around regardless then I think the side-to-side backline of yore will be a distant memory.

Now, why don't they give Dave Hewett the Canterbury Head Coach job and keep him as an assistant at the Crusaders! :)

I'm hearing that Robertson really wants Jason Ryan, but the board is concerned with his lack of experience.

His lack of early 00's experience playing for the Crusaders? Very tough to get that experience now.

Jason Ryan has been appointed the new Assistant Coach Forwards

Jason Ryan appointed to BNZ Crusaders coaching team

    Published: 16 September 2016

The BNZ Crusaders have completed their coaching roster for 2017, appointing Jason Ryan as the Assistant Coach Forwards.

Ryan will work alongside Scott Robertson as Head Coach, Brad Mooar as Assistant Coach and Leon MacDonald as Assistant Coach Backs.

BNZ Crusaders CEO Hamish Riach said Ryan brings a great skill set to the team: “We are really pleased to that Jason has signed up with the Crusaders through to 2019. He has been doing excellent work with the forwards in the Canterbury team for the last five years, as well as for the Black Ferns and New Zealand Under 20 teams, so we are sure that he will make a valuable contribution to the Crusaders as well.”

BNZ Crusaders Head Coach Scott Robertson said Ryan had worked extremely hard and proven himself with all of the teams he has worked with, so was a well-deserved appointment.

“I have worked with Jase at both Canterbury and NZ Under 20s level and I admire and respect him as a coach. He is well-known in New Zealand rugby circles as an expert on scrums and it is a prized skillset that he will bring to the group,” Robertson said.

Ryan said he was thrilled to be offered the role and cannot wait to get his teeth into it.

“This is a huge opportunity for me and it is still sinking in to be honest! I know that it is a big step up to Super Rugby but I am determined to give it everything and make a strong contribution to the well respected legacy of the Crusaders. Making the step up with Razor (Scott Robertson) definitely makes it easier. We know each other well as coaches and we already know that we work well together, which should help to make the transition more seamless for everyone. I can’t wait to get started,” Ryan said.

Ryan’s contract begins at the end of the Mitre 10 Cup season and is for three years.
