New Ruck Laws Rant
-

What has got me confused is the fact that penalties for coming in the side seem to have gone through the roof, at least in the couple of games i have seen.

Most of them seem to be for guys coming in the side behind the midpoint of the breakdown (which is a bigger grey area than the 'gate') from an onside position.

I think the refs might be struggling with the new laws just as much as the players, can't be easy to adjust split second decision making after having it a certain way for so long.

Still think the biggest area needing a rethink, ie. the maul, has been ignored. There is no contest for possession, it is legal obstruction and you can't tackle the ball carrier to the ground. How does that fit with the rest of the game?

Not to mention the fact that any collapse of the maul is likely to result in a penalty against the defending team, particularly in the 22, yet attacking teams can collapse a maul to prevent a player being held up or to score a try.
-

Mauls. Make 2 people needed at the back bound together and to the maul. Not holding on by one hand. Make them bind properly. And the rest well flip a coin when it falls over!!!

This is happening under the new rules, or is that what you are referring to? -

He means the law trials being held in the Mitre 10 Cup at the moment. There is already topic on it; not sure why a new one has been started.

It's a bloody shambles IMO ....like others have said ...just apply the current rules properly.

E.g. how often were ABs taken out of the game beyond the ruck last weekend? -
What pisses me off (apart from the hacks at the ball from all angles), is the defending players walking over the tackled player, taking up the space on the wrong side of the ruck, all before the tackled player has had a chance to release the ball.
Effectively the tackled player is being forced to place the ball under the oppositions feet.

Man up NZRU, admit your mistake and pull these stupid bloody rules now before any more rugby is ruined! -

Add in players off their feet and the ruck area is a mess.
-

Nah, different mess now, worse so far... -

Yeah it really has taken the contest out of the ruck - and rugby is all about contest of possession - so it takes a key component out of the game - it's too easy to maintain possession with these new rules. Also agree that not a real big fan of using Mitre 10 Cup to be a guinea pig for these new laws - it's not like this is a subtle tweak to a rule or something (e.g. 5 metres back when defending a scrum rather than at number 8 feet) - it changes the whole complexion of the game.
