Southgate strikes me as a very average coach. Foden had a stellar club season but looked bang ordinary.

Pretty hard to blame that on Southgate. Serbian defence had made it clear they were targeting Kane, Foden & Bellingham and were all over them. Can't expect all players to be magnificent in every game.
England still had Saka though who they just couldn't read. Personally think they should have 2-0 up as Kyle Walker should have just shot instead of passing across the box to nobody. Was plenty of room for a player of his calibre to get a good strike in.
I'm only commentating on the first half as I fell asleep in the second - damn jet lag.
I was thinking the same about Southgate, but he's had fairly decent results. Apparently in the opening games in tournaments, England were 5 wins from 23. With Southgate they are 4-4.

Southgate needs to play him as the 10 and move Bellingham deeper with Rice. TAA is ineffective.

I found it weird bringing on Gallagher. What more does Cole palmer need to do?
-
@Billy-Tell Palmer and Gallagher are entirely different players - Gallagher runs around a lot, Palmer strolls in attacking positions.
I don't think TAA can play central midfield at this level unless he plays there every week - it's an easy position to play when you're doing all of the attacking (as Liverpool usually do) but you need really good feet to be able to receive the ball facing your own goal then control and distribute it.
Southgate has been great at building team spirit and showing loyalty to his players - but he is no tactical genius and games seem to get away from him easily. He has a talent pool way above previous England managers so expectations are higher, as they should be. Getting Shaw back will solve some of the structural problems (if Shaw is up to speed.

In surprising news Belgium choked and lukaku failed to convert multiple chances.

He also had 2 goals disallowed - one for being offside when he really should have ensured he wasn't, and one for a handball in the buildup when it would have been a well taken goal. Add in a goal line clearance by the Slovaks and it was definitely one of those nights for the Belgians.

Two cracking goals in an exciting match

England look like a third rate side. Coach is just rubbish.

Tories have more chance of winning the election than England winning this tournament

Having seen Germany play, you can see what their strategy is for chance creation. Havertz the front focus, Gundogan the link man, Musiala and Wirtz floating side to side looking for space, Andrisch the work horse and Kroos the "quarterback". Then Mittelstadt and Kimmich push up from full back to provide width and support to Musiala and Wirtz - meanwhile Kroos drops back to provide a 3 man cover.
For England ...... get the ball to Saka and hope he creates something. At least he has Walker there to support and provide width. Other than that, make it up as they go along.
