Rugby Australia statement regarding Melbourne Rebels

Rugby Australia statement regarding Melbourne Rebels

Rugby Australia (RA) advises that the application from a Consortium seeking a Participation Agreement for the Melbourne Rebels to participate in the 2025 Super Rugby Pacific competition has been unsuccessful.

@NTA without seeing their business case i can only assume it didn;t hold up long term...and only hope RA did enough due diligence to work that out

    Why would they start now?

If the private consortium was willing to pay the bills, why cut them?

They address this in their statement. Basically:

The Consortium has made it clear that it is seeking a contribution from RA of several million dollars to cover forecast operating losses – this is in addition to the standard funding that would be available under a Participation Agreement.

The identity of the Consortium members has not been disclosed to RA and, as a result the credentials of the Consortium were unable to be fully assessed.

Key advisers to the Consortium include one or more former directors of Melbourne Rebels Rugby Union Pty Ltd (MRRU), meaning that an individual or individuals involved were responsible for the governance of MRRU during the period in which the Administrator considers the company may have traded while insolvent.

Since the Rebels’ inaugural year in 2011, MRRU has not been independently financially sustainable despite significant additional investment by RA over and above committed club grants. There is nothing in the Consortium’s proposal which demonstrates with sufficient certainty that this will change.

The Consortium has claimed to have committed $18m in funding, though no documentary evidence has been provided to support this.

No material has been provided outlining the new ownership structure, the new delivery model across two locations (AAMI Park and Tarneit) or how the historic financial challenges faced by MRRU would be mitigated under the new model.

So who plays the Lions next year at Marvel Stadium now instead of Rebels?

The Drua would be a good option.

@KiwiMurph the Drua would be a great shout

They could also give the local rugby scene a real boost and play the State Rep Team (the Axemen)

@barbarian yeah....not surprised when spelt out like that, a buisness case thats starts with needing to be propped up as theyre forecasting ongoing loss...is hardly a lifeline is it

I think the back-up plan was potentially an Australia A or Barbarians team.

most likely i guess...also the most boring option, they already playing an ANZAC team, that would be just another "best of the worst" team

Quite frankly given the circumstances it's the best possible option. Aren't the Axemen park footballers? If so, that would be a slaughter.

@antipodean yeah, club players although a few u20 internationals

was 70-80% tongue in cheek...BUT...part of the disconnect with the local rugby fans and the rebels was always not enough locals....you would get a crowd to see the Lions dirt trackers flog the Axemen

invitational teams going to do fuck all to grow interest, especially if several will play for ANZAC team

Aussies have loads of wingers to pick from. Mark Nawaqkjhlkdsfsdtawase is erratic, the fact he is leaving makes it an easy call

I don't mind the Beale selection. He made a huge difference to the Force. I assume Schmidt is going to go for the second play maker style of fullback.. loads of chat and take the pressure off of the flawed tens. Kellaway number one and Beale the injury cover?

I get that he's a squaddie. But he is still 35, and hasn't been a difference maker at test level since like 2011. Aussie need to build test quality depth pretty much everywhere, this seems like a wasted development spot.

Unless, of course, he's there to show some kids the ropes.

Avoiding the very error Slick Eddie made.
