A little on the different side but I attended the Maraenui v NTOB Division 2 clash at Maraenui Park today. The game ended at 23 - 23 after 2 penalties in the last three minutes (one to each side) with the Maraenui one coming right on full time. Naturally I was disappointed about that!
As it was an early game all of my guys must have departed to watch the NTOB Premiers get hammered by Taradale at Taradale. Not me though as I adjourned to the Maraenui clubrooms to do what is expected of visiting teams and supporters. Sadly I was disappointed to discover that I was to be the only NTOB representative in the good number of people in the clubrooms. I am sure pleased that I did as they made me feel most welcome and certainly looked after me even finding somewhere for me to securely store my pushbike - no worries about drink driving! - away safely (only HB people will understand the reasons for that!!!!!). Just had to buy 2 beers of the about six or seven that I consumed (and that does not count the NTOB player of the Day one by default!). I therefore rank Maraenui Rugby & Sports Club right alongside Northern United in Porirua as the most hospitable of rugby clubs that I have visited in NZ (and there must be over 100 on the list).
It turns out that I found out my Uncle was Patron of Maraenui at one stage (something that I was completely unaware of) not long before I had to depart but that certainly did not factor into my ranking. Thank you Maraenui for the magnificent hospitality, I will certainly be back. -

Fuck me, that club should be closed permanently
I think that is extremely short sighted and reactionary. Tamatea as a club actually has a recent history of keeping young Maori from the gangs.

You're probably right, but I doubt any team will want to play them for a long time
I doubt teams in the Bay are going to have an issue playing the club in general. Some might be nervous about playing that particular team, but I think this incident will be a one off.
League in HB is very gang based (much more than rugby) and the Mob and BP manage to mostly keep in under wraps on Sundays.

The same could be labelled against Marist St Pats who have been involved in recent crowd fighting against OBU not to mention the 7s assault involving them against Petone.

Marist St Pats
i would go a step further and suggest that all Marist clubs (including all Brothers clubs in Aus) should be immediately fired in to the sun

A bit more complicated for 16/17 year old's to play senior rugby here in NZ. Not just a permission form signed by their parents. They then have to get a doctor to fill in a form and then have a RDO from the union to assess their suitability before being signed off. Got a couple of young guys fresh to the country that might go through the process. Their dad was thinking about getting them into Boys High but they might have to go to a co-ed school with a poor rugby program.

16/17 year old's that have left school can't play for schools either in the Waikato. I have read that they have relaxed those rules a bit in the Thames Valley. I didn't play school rugby in the 90's. I played club. My under 17's team was a mix of guys still at my school, guys who had started apprenticeships and some of their mates from a couple of other schools.

An improvement from my club Te Rapa but still no win. A bit more expectation this year with some new players with Prem grade experience. They just need time to bed in. It doesn't get easier with last years finalist Leamington next week. We had a HBHS 1st XV player from last year join this week, Inga Kokohu. We don't usually get that caliber of player in our grade, it helps that his brother is a player/coach.
