Conway looked better in the 2nd innings still lack of foot movement and his hands being to far away from the body leading to an unnatural arc of the bat are issues, but they were a bit less prominent in that innings.
He just looked rusty, opening his shoulders trying to get quick runs will be good for his head space and get his feet moving more.
Hopefully we see improvement in the 2nd test we need him v Australia,Young with his problem of losing his off stump and getting nicked off will, make the Aussie quicks eyes light up.

@Chris Sounds a lot like the former CD batsman before him Jamie How. Technique looked good on the eye, but would always bring the slips into play with the very hard hands he would go with.

Both Young and How have very similar records too, it's like a reincarnation as to how similar they both are.

Yeah Good call very similar players and similar weakness.
Both lose their off stumps so play too much down off stump instead of 4th stump line to the moving ball and both had/have hard hands as you mentioned so they commit to early.

If Young is in the team I might play him at opener and Conway at 4 or 5. I am not sold on Conway as an opener in tests.

I am not convinced Young is a test opener
13 tests no hundreds as an opener and average of 26.

Conway has had success as an opener he just needs to iron out a couple of bad habits that have crept in to his technique.

A bit of talk about Conway's struggles, and rightly so, but I think Latham hasn't been setting the world on fire either. We used to be able to rely on him scoring well against teams apart from the big guns, but his runs seem to have dried up against everybody now.

The article says that Young WILL start. Ok, I’m fine with that, let’s give him another chance.

But they still need to leave out a bowler to accomodate O’Rourke much as I wish it were Wagner.

Who would that be ? Phillips ? 39 with the bat and 1-30 with the ball is pretty ho hum. I can’t see them getting rid of the rejuvenated Santner after his six wickets in the match.

    Wagner or Santner I assume.
Edit: Actually stuff article yesterday mentioned Jamieson as being rested. But not heard / read that anywhere else.

But with the new selector, it is harder to read now(yet) what they are working to. I don't know if the 4 seamers is still a desired balance for them (in a post-Wagner world) or if Santner is a horses for courses Mt Maunganui selection. We will find out as the season progresses, although this test v weakened South Africa won't tell us, as there is still the possibility for depth building and rotation, experimentation to be happening.

But, kudos to Sam Wells so far. IMO.

Taking this SA team lightly is sure to bite in bum. A top order collapse for NZ this morning and everything changes.

First and only priority - win this series.

    SA batting.

Cricinfo says there is three changes. Young, O’Rourke AND Wagner in. Not sure how they’ve reshuffled that !

For me, Wagner is the risky selection.

We'll see how he goes, though.

The world has gone mad, I genuinely feel for Santner missing out !

Also would love KJ to get another run before the Oz series.

This really smacks of complacency to me.

Really is a test with an eye on Australia, rather than a standalone potential series winning test against SA.

    From Southee...

Tim Southee, NZ captain, says they were looking to have a bowl. Hope there's a bit of assistance early on. Three changes: Daryl is out, Will Young comes in. Four seamers. Neil Wagner is in for Mitch Santner. Kyle Jamieson pulled up sore, so Will O'Rourke come in on debut. We know Wagner wears his heart on his sleeve and will give his 100%. So looking forward to that, excited to see what Will, an exciting young quick, has got.

Seddon Park offers more bounce now and doesn't usually assist the spinners, so Santner would have been a luxury despite his heroics in the 1st test.

Genuinely think we have a proper test bowler in O'Rourke with a decent career potential. Doesn't guarantee he has a great debut, coz reasons. But very pleased for him.
