Darry, senior lock until Tuipulotu returns, was rapt to get the callup for his first captaincy assignment since his first XV days in Christchurch. “We had a wider leadership group meeting Sunday night, and it was kind of dropped on me then,” he said from Japan. “I had to do a bit of a double-take. But I see it as a leadership by committee, with guys like Ricky Riccitelli, Anton Segner, Stevie [Perofeta] and Caleb [Clarke] all working together to lead the boys on Saturday.” First-year head coach Vern Cotter said it had been an easy call to up the responsibility for his young lock. “Sam’s a logical choice because he’s well organised, he’s professional, he speaks well in front of the group and it is a natural fit with him.” And Cotter was looking for more of the same after an impressive first-up hitout in the 43-7 victory over the Sungoliath. “A lot of good things happened because we did things well that we’d trained and there were things we were exposed in that we need to work on,” he said. “We’ve looked at some things we want to change this weekend, and to tighten up a few things where we felt we were a bit loose. Canon will be bigger, and more physical, which will be good.”
