Super Rugby’s Melbourne Rebels falls behind on tax bill, stadium fees

Super Rugby’s Melbourne Rebels falls behind on tax bill, stadium fees

While the ATO is demanding its directors pay up, the club’s chairman, Paul Docherty, insists the team is financially viable.

Rugby Vic are currently building a new "centre of excellence" up at monash uni (no where near any of the major clubs in melbourne)....but doesnt look like it has much of a stand so can't even take games somewhere like that to save money....and im not sure how many rectangular stadium with smaller capacities there are in melbourne

Saw this discussed in Aus rugby sire, and seems there no decent rectanguler stadia in Melbourne.
Interesting as I think the Rebels look a reasonable team this year.

other than aami the only ones i can think of would have a athletics tracks...missed a trick not building even a 5k stand with the centre of excellence

Wonder if New Zealand is trying to do what South Africa is doing. The tour of the Crusaders early in 2024 will give them exposure to the Irish and UK teams, wonder if it is a way of testing the waters. The two trial games in Japan could also be the start of integrating some of these competitions.

@SBW1 NZR have made no secret they looking to get closer relationship with Japan, think the top 2 in super playing the Japanese teams preseason is in place for a few years. JRU paying the costs fro Blues& Chiefs I believe.
Pretty sure the Crusaders Leinster is just a one of money spinner.
But there seems to be World club champs soon anyway, so that will stir it all up .

So in an era where an increasing amount of clubs seem to be in financial difficulty, the solution is increasing travel costs?

Probably as you need more people watching to get more money I guess. Not just bums on seats, but sponsorship etc.

So play a proper season with existing teams.

If it was that simple I think they would? I find it a little hard to comprehend that all the people charged with running game in NZ/Aus, and the states /province/clubs I think they would be pushing for it. I am like you and prefer a full season, but I don't have an inside to finacials etc.
But even a longer season or whatever isn't going to get more money in game is it? I think they are trying to expand into new markets etc to do that very thing as unfortunately the day the game went professional, money became overiding factor.

I'm not sure you've been paying attention to their demonstrated competence thus far.

Yep mate, just not sure I can claim to know if they are or aren't competent. As I say, I don't claim to know the full costs etc, and all the ins and outs of running the comp. I learnt a long time ago it's easy to be smarter than the people who actually do the job, when I don't actually do anything to show I right or wrong.

That's not a crticism of anyone having an opinion etc, as I reckon if you asked the posters on here they would all run it different etc, and be absolutely convinced the rest who wanted to do it other way were idiots.

Was readin a post by @OomPB in NH rugby saying how good the crowds are in SA at this time of year. Is the idea of moving comp to summer a good thing for super? Not saying yay or nay (well probably not keen), just wonder if we insist on playing at night for TV audiences, could that be a way to go? Certainly be more comfertable going to games.

@Dan54 The URC had an all time record attendances for a single round in round 8.

The time is very important because we are nearly on the same time zone. Italy get the early matches, South Africa 17h00-19h00 and the Irish, Scots and Wales the late slot. We get two games sometimes at the same time.

Not so good for the Lions in Ellis Park though, from what I have seen

@Machpants it's the area. They are working on it. May move to UJ (uni of Joburh). The Stormers have host some match esat Craven Stadium on Stellenbosch with great success while they replaced CT Stadium play area.

Ellis Park being huge kills the atmosphere even with a decent crowd. Same as our SR games in places like the Cake Tin and Eden Park, too big and feel empty even when there is 10k+ people

Really love to see the South African sides back in the comp, surely the addition of a few in the future isn't off the cards.

The Highlanders would love for that to happen too as it would give them a few more winable games, especially if some of the Aussie teams are given the heave hoe.

@Higgins there is also early talks that the struggling Rebels may not last until after 2025 due to financial issues. A merger with the Brumbies could be on the cards, a positive move if it happens IMO.
