@MN5 The kits from the smaller craft breweries use exactly the same stuff as the breweries use. Like you, people are really surprised at how good it is.
70p a pint is hard to beat, Especially when it keeps for ages.
Not usually an issue for me. I’m too generous when people visit, I need to be more stingy so I don’t have to keep re brewing !

@MN5 I like the idea of having a number of different beers in smaller quantities so I can vary things
I hear that although I have Sabre single hop IPA, Chili Pilsner, Coffee Stout and soon to brew more Pink Grapefruit IPA. A nice wheat beer after that then maybe another Stout to age for a few months. My main issue is needing to buy more bottles all the time.

I have chinotto growing, wonder if would work like roasted, herbed and spiced up, with an ale.

Deep Creek is the latest brewery to have financial problems.

A real shame. I wonder how many will have to follow suit ?
Sad fact is it’s fucken hard to justify spending $13 on a single chocolate coffee stout at the Supermarket no matter how good it might be.

I'd heard the rumour that Deep Creek were in trouble. In many ways it's a relief that it was an extraordinary one-off that has caused the issue rather than something more systemic.
The smart money was that the imminent receivership was going to be Hawkes Bay Brewing. Apparently they have big money and staff issues.

Craft brewing is not the way to get wealthy. Margins are tight, and if yo ucarry debt or stock, the interest rates are killing you.
Tough times. Delighted Epic survived, hope these guys can reinvent themselves and go again. They made some fantasttic beers

Just brewed this and waiting for bottling next week. Should be a lovely drop for the warmer months ahead. Smelt pretty damn nice as we were doing the boil.
Then doing this.
I like my stouts strong so gonna whip up two of them. It’s 5.5% alcohol for 18 litres. If we brew 25 litres it’ll end up 7.92% according to my shitty maths. More Stout to put in the cellar and age nicely.

@MN5
As you're getting into your homebrewing, which is great to see, you might want to consider trying Brewfather, a great app that helps you to build your beer recipes and calculate things like ABV.They have a free version and if you like it and use it enough, the paid version is worth it.
I have the recipe and comments for every all grain brew I've done stored in the app which is great for coming up with new recipes and being able to look at what you've used and how you used it.
Happy brewing

This is right up my alley !
Out of interest what are your views on witbier ? It seems to be a style that isn’t too popular judging by the lack of them on the supermarket shelves but having had one at Leuven in Wellington a couple of weeks back I had to brew some and good old Mangrove Jacks made it easy.
Smells amazing so far and so easy, no dry hopping or anything like that.
-
@MN5 used to really enjoy a good witbier say 10+ years ago when they were popular but you're right, not many of them around these days.
Haven't even thought of brewing one myself as I've been focusing on both NEIPA/Hazies and West Coast IPAs for the most part with the odd Belgian thrown into the mix.
Will definitely put that on my "to brew" list.

Yeah my “to brew” list is getting long. I plan on stocking up in the next week or so and going hard out over the break. I’ll be doing the Stout above but also keen on a Red Ale, Porter, Hazy ( lots of requests for it ) more Pink Grapefruit IPA ( possibly my favourite of the ones I’ve brewed so far and Pilsner.
Not sure if we’ll bother with Saison, it’s not that popular ( more for me though ! ) and needs to be brewed at a higher temp which might be a pain.

Anyone had any success/experience in brewing low alcohol beers? Any low sugar recipes or kits available? Need some for Christmas and New Year visitors.
