Never really the plan.

After all - we declared after five sessions, with another ten sessions to play in the match. We could have batted on and set an even stiffer follow-on target if we weren't concerned about resting the bowlers between Zimbabwean innings.

Following on these days is actually stacked a bit against the dominant team. Not that they risk losing but more risk drawing.

Resting bowlers on flat decks comes into the equation far more than 20+ years ago

So, there's 59 overs left today and 90 tomorrow

They got 362 on a flat wicket

We are 230 odd ahead.

What to do?

Set them 330 odd? Probably 350 to 380 might be the go and rely on a day 5 pitch and Santner and Ish and Kane. I saw the quicks bowling and really it was flat and little swing so not a pitch for seamers

How about bat for 35-40 overs today encouraging a rr of 4.5 plus

Then have an hour tonight and 3 sessions tomorrow to get 10 wickets. Too conservative?

Or go for it ODI style until the lead is 400 in hopefully 30 odd overs - about 6 an over?

Well, the two quick wickets change the plan - I'd look to bat for half an hour after tea - but going full noise for that half hour - 4 an over till tea (120) 7 an over after (another 50). 400 ahead with say 110 overs to bowl. That's probably a bit conservative - maybe have a slog for the half hour before tea. 370 off 120.

In saying that plan - Brendon was always a lot more aggressive and generous than me in his declarations.

Yeah a better approach might be to dangle a 4.5 an over target for them to chase (regardless of time)

Sure they got 360 in the first but it was all at 2 an over for the most.

Lure them into the chase, just like we used to do at Mot Rec and the Botanics (never at Wanderers home ground though 😉 )

370 off 120 is only a bit over 3.0, so it's just asking them to up the rate a little.

This game is Zim's highest 4th innings total, so what does Kane remember? :)

I hope the BC's don't bat too long. If a pair of the Zimbots digs in again and they eke out a draw it will be a bad result for us.

Lead is currently 371 - I'd declare at 400-420 personally.

Kinda feels like the Black Caps have sold themselves short, given how dominant they were in their first innings.

That said, it's hard to imagine that Zimbabwe will have the mental fortitude to dig in and see this out. As seems to happen in world cricket, whenever an average team is batting to save a match, they fall apart and go cheaply. I'd expect we'll have them 4 down by the end of today.

The TAB were paying $1.55 on a Black Caps win during the first session this morning. Looking okay money now

Little Kane edges past Steve Waugh and Sunny Gavaskar on the alltime averages list. Rossco past Neil Harvey and Doug Walters.

Adam Voges and Steve Smith top ten of alltime if they retire now - which tells you something about the current rate of average inflation.
