Not a bad effort by our girls vs Gold medal favourites USA. We had a couple of bad lapses in both halves, that 2nd goal early in 2nd half deflated us a bit. But overall we toiled hard and did control the ball for good periods.

I read somewhere that "Wonderstrike sink NZ" I ha a look at the video and it was a ok hit but the keeper got beat near post and it was truly horrendous

Looking at the video that shot wasn't hit with much power. I'd be pissed off to concede a goal like that, even against the top team.

The NZ womens team struggles to score against quality opposition and now have to beat Colombia and then have a must-win against no.3 France.

Aust lost to Canada, a team ranked below them.

The 2nd goal was soft as IMO and that's why I think it deflated us a bit.

Wow! No mention of aerobics, rollerblading or frisbee throwing? The IOC move at such a snails pace, new sports are old sports before they adopt them. I'm surprised cross-fit isn't on the list.

My understanding is that these new sports will replace some existing sports, or at least there will be less events within certain sports as there is a set total number of events. Rowing was mentioned in an earlier media report.

So really the Olympics are becoming the X-Games.

[broken record] Swimming could do with a massive cull of medal events [/broken record] to make room.

I can't for the life of me see why tennis, football and golf are in.

There are a lot of old minority sports that could do with a downgrade

Orienteering, wood chopping, hop scotch, force back, so many they need to look at.

Burling/Tuke named flagbearers. Do they take turns during the ceremony, or is it going to be like an extended version of the awkward RWC2011 final three-way handshake?

EDIT: I see they're co-captains but Burling will carry the flag. Well, that's not as exciting.

A reasonable choice, if it's a windy day Burling's experience in sail management may come in useful. Though personally I would have chosen Nick Willis to do the job.

Rio Olympics 2016: Why the Olympic pool must have lifeguards

The world's best swimmers are in safe hands at the Rio Olympics, where they will even compete under the eye of lifeguards who are on red alert should they need to pluck a superstar from the waters.

With whistles and flotation devices at the ready, a fleet of 75 lifeguards have already been seen providing round the clock surveillance at the training sessions. As the New York Times noted, this might be a sensible precaution for water polo, synchronised swimming and diving where accidents might happen. But swimming?

"Yes, it's necessary," lifeguard supervisor Danielle Martelote at the Aquatics Stadium. She said cramps, heart attacks and head-first crashes into the wall were the extreme if remote dangers faced by Olympians.

FINA, swimming's international body, requires its major world events to comply with local rules. A Rio de Janeiro state law requires the presence of lifeguards at swimming pools larger than seven by seven metres, thus the Olympic coverage....

Nick is cured, so I believe the flagstick would simply be in a safe and experienced pair of hands - as long as he doesn't have to parade anywhere near the Brazilian beach volleyball team. :)
