Mrs Dan and myself have decided we might just do a trip down south for a couple of weeks early November. Rough plan is ferry to Picton, meander down to Christchurch and then maybe head over to West Coast, and turn south. We were in Nelson last year, hance we giving that a miss this time round. So looking for suggestions on itenary. Have done Milford Sounds a couple of times so we looking to see some different thing (much as we loved it) I 69 so not looking at anything to vigorous etc. Also interested to see or hear of craft beer places maybe as there be romm to bring a few home!

I did the South Island last in 2017.

I'd never been over Arthur's Pass before and I really enjoyed it - stunning drive. Also enjoyed Hamner Springs to chill out for a bit & the ruggedness & downright old school feel of Greymouth. Was a rough day there, so watching the boats go in/out of the harbour was fun.

Queenstown will always be what it is, good food, great golf and a million different ways to part company with you hard earned.

I don't really get Wanaka myself. Picturesque maybe, but what else does it offer?

Cheers Major, I ws thinking Arthur's Pass , and will make sure Hamner Springs and Greymouth are on list. Though I enjoy Queenstown will have to think of something I want to do there that I haven't or may give it a miss. Kind of keen to see bits I haven't been too first, though will call into or Dunedin and Invercargill probably Mrs hasn't been to Invers

I did the drive from Chch to the West Coast a few years ago. I would definitely stop at the Otira Viaduct lookout on the way. The Hokitika Gorge is a must see (while the walking bridge is still open) and then you've got Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers if you are driving south on SH6.

What are your interests? That will make a big difference to any recommendations.

Based on what little you have fleshed out and assuming you are driving back . Then Kaikoura Christchurch Franz Joseph (heli glacier) Haast Pass Te Anau - Doubtful Sound Tuatapere Invercargill Catlins Dunners Oamaru Omarama Mt Cook Tekapo Hanmer Springs across the Lewis up through Murchison and Nelson Lakes and back to Picton would be the route I would take.

Where you stop and what you do depends on your preferences, time (not a factor?) and budget.

Get in! Closing on 1 October. Hokitika Gorge is ridiculous - the water colour is insane.

Yep mate, really not sure what interests are apart from it time to see more of this glorious country. And I am taking all these suggestion n board and then will work out itenary. But almost all things you have mentioned are going in list to se what we can work on.
I will kind of explain, while sitting here with my good lady yesterday, I started off mentioning ads I had got from airlines about trips overseas etc, anyway it went from there to deciding bugger it all lets head down South again, etc (last year at this time we did Nelson area and loved it.
I reckon I got one more big trip overseas in body, and so that's been put aside for hopefully this time next year, where I hoping to catch a bit of rugby in Wales and around Britain (way to celebrate turning 70), so we kind of figure hell you know it's going to get harder to even travel aroung NZ in 5-6 years (driving etc) so lets do some stuff when mood takes us. We tossed up heading to Northland, but that will be another day!

bit of a different idea, before we left chch we did the transalpine, made for a different and more relaxing trip over to the west coast and back, packed a picnic for the train, spend the afternoon and night in grey mouth and then came back the next day
