Hurricanes chief executive Avan Lee has addressed Julian Savea’s exit from the club, saying poor contract negotiations saw the parties part ways.
Lee shed more light on that situation this afternoon, saying discussions between the two parties “weren’t as good as they should have been” but he wished Savea all the best for the next part of his career.
Lee also noted that a change in the team’s coaching setup for 2024 – with Clark Laidlaw replacing Jason Holland as head coach - played a part in the outcome.
“There were conversations taking place between coaches and the player, and obviously that didn’t work out in Julian’s favour. It’s massively difficult to go through a process like that and see a legend of the club leaving,” Lee said.
“The fact we had a new coaching setup was definitely a complication because that person hadn’t started, the coaches had to discuss players and contracts, who might be coming in and who might not be.

@frugby lol you have Connor Garden-Bachop and a random Argentinian. I’d take Julian any day over those options.
Not as a winger.
-
If it’s Laidlaw coming in and making tough decisions then I’m all for it. Holland was too soft and never made the hard calls. I’d like us to get rid of Rayasi aswell, he’s way too lazy and inconsistent.

Random Argentinian who will start games at the RWC for Argentina... he is so much better than Savea.
He has had his time.

@Chris I strongly doubt it. It is so obviously MP... and regardless, I think the Highlanders are more likely to be looking for a second five than a centre.
Could be the opportunity to play 2nd 5 he has been looking for 😀

Now I'm confused-isn't TUG more a 12?

In the article from Club Rugby NZ below, they understand that two high profile Hurricanes players are signing with Moana Pasifika for next season. One is likely to be Julian Savea, anyone have any leads on who the other might be?
-
Maybe Reed Prinseep or Salesi Rayasi are the only 2 I can think of who would have a MP connection.
Peter Umaga-Jensen,? -
@Chris I wouldn't class Prinsep as high profile though but I hope you're right. Rayasi is another I wouldn't mind departing. I wouldn't be sad if PUJ departed either knowing we have Higgins waiting for his chance, who I rate higher aswell.

@Canes4life
No me neither, but most of your other players are signed up or have AB/AB XV pathways so I can not see any of them moving. -
@Canes4life
It could be after being sent home from Japan with AB XV,Maybe he feels that door has closed. -
@Chris he's been disappointing aswell. Similar to Rayasi, I feel like he has a tendency to switch off in games.
There are plenty of locking options for the Canes anyway, Delany, Plummer, Bird, Sangster, the injured Anthony Pettett and the two under 20s locks in Allen / Morrison will all be vying for spots.

@Canes4life IWL is still under contract with the Canes.
There are several possibilities in addition to Julian Savea: Pasilio Tosi, Reed Prinsep, Salesi Rayasi, Peter Umaga-Jensen and less likely: Tevita Mafileo, TK Howden, Brayden Iose and unlikely, Kini Naholo, Jacob Devery.
