@MajorRage I get that, but Ange got dismissed completely just because of where he came from, where as Conte and Mourinho were seen as both great appointments despite the fact that their defensive style of management had gone completely out of date and was never gonna work in England anymore, but due to their success years and years ago, people saw them as great appointments at the time.
-
Mourinho great appointment is a huge history rewrite. He was panned from the start ( for spurs and Man U). Conte was more about if he could work with Levy.
I think history of ppl failing to take the big club step up brings the skepticism, not arrogance. Those that succeed (few n far between) are embraced.
Media in this country are, collectively, a complete bunch of fluffybunnies. But football wise, they are quite smart. There are genuinely only 5-6 managers globally who could win the PL.
-
Levy has a history of poor manager selections, not to mention some pretty poor performance in the transfer market over the years. Spurs fans were excited over the high profile appointments of Mourinho and Conte because it felt like an expression of intent from the owners. But in both cases they expected more player spending than Daniel Levy was willing to make, and their negative tactics did not please the fans. Both managers ultimately lost the dressing room because of their attitudes. If I think back to the best performing Spurs head coaches in the last 20 years, they would be Martin Jol, Harry Redknapp, Mauricio Pochettino. None of those men came in with fanfare from the media, they won the fans over with their play. Ange has a typically low key Antipodean style persona, the players look to be enjoying his attacking style and will appreciate the relative lack of mind games

Can add anything to the discussion of coaches due to my recent return to football. Have some concerns about Arsenal and still see Man City the team to beat although Chelsea with their new additions, including Caicedo, might prove a hand full as the season progresses.
Not sure Edu and Arteta are the cats meow. Concerned about their acquisitions including Jorginho, Viera and Havertz. While Jorginho played a role when Partey was out you don't won't to run him out there when you play Man City. Same with Viera.
Arsenal are pretty predictable as they like to play through Saka and Martinelli and smart teams allow this then surround them with 3 players and they have to pass back into the midfield.
We really don't have the ability to attack up through the middle of the park. That's why I think they need need another more attacking central midfielder.
Timber looked the goods and is a huge loss. One good recruitment.

There have been some soft pens given and some nailed not given and this season it seems like the VAR is backing the ref's decision almost 100% - which is what a lot of people called for with the clear and obvious error mandate. The problem is of course what you consider clear and obvious. The penalty given for Rashford's dive today was very soft - the contact was minimal and there have been a few like that already this season.
Anyway a good win for Notts and we're sitting nicely in 4th after getting belted on the opening day.
Spurs look fun to watch again. Masterstroke to get rid of Kane.
-
Don't think the Spurs match was one sided, Bournemouth had a few chances they should have done better with. The squad is clearly lacking enough clinical finishers. However with 7 players still out I am not surprised. We might get two back after the international break but a bit longer before we get to see some of our new attacking signings in action, unless of course we buy Daka before the window close..

I think Harry would have loved playing with this group. I expect, with his contract running down, that his hand was forced by the club not wanting him to walk on a free. But in pure on pitch terms, for once I think he's mistimed his run

West Ham’s 2nd & 3rd goals were exceptionally well taken.
-
@Higgins Unexpected. Obviously, Arsenal had the overwhelming majority of possession, but we didn't just sit back and defend we transitioned well and had enough chances to nick it. I think we deserved our point.
What a difference Palhina makes. Possibly the most valuable player (to his team) in theleague.
We need to keep him and add a CD, couple of FB's a back-up to Palhina and a replacement for Mitro. In the next 5 days.....

Ward Prowse also looking like a very good pick up

Another win for Aston Villa. Moussa Diaby is lethal. They broke their transfer record for him at 52 mil but looks to be worth every cent so far. The man has serious wheels.
I expect big things from this very strong Villi side this season. They have some serious talent there.
-
Saudis have ruined the beginning of 2023 season for me. Not only did they take Mitrovic ( although he might have been approaching busted flush stage ) but also unsettled Willian and coach Silva. I really want Fulham to go back to their early century form and stop yo yoing.

Another Fulham fan? What are the odds? Good to see that Fulham punctured the Ange ball a few hours ago!

I watched a lot of Bundesliga highlights last season and Diaby looked quite a player - really quick but also a good finisher/provider.

The Ange revolution at Spurs is progressing with promise so far. There was a hiccup in midweek, with a team loaded with second string players getting knocked out of the league cup. Going a goal behind early last night, Spurs showcased their new high pressing and attacking mindset by putting 5 past Burnley in a 5-2 win.
-
I have no idea what arsenal saw in havertz. Crap at Chelsea and so far crap at arsenal.
Add martial to that list for MU
-
@Billy-Tell Yes I am finding it hard to understand Arteta's hard one for Havertz. I am being patient, probably for no reason. Should have scored as with Saka. Good win though against Man U although by the width of a skin graft. Partey's injury may have forced Arteta's hand as it brought White into where he should be playing all the time. Toma can't play left back and go forward.
