FIFA Women's World Cup

@MiketheSnow why does it need to? The ball just needs to touch the paint, not be surrounded by it
If people want to play silly buggers about whether the ball is in the right spot or not they'll do that regardless of how big the spot is

Considering it wasn't even Spain's best team that's quite the performance, federation was in disarray prior to the tournament with a lot of the players in the squad not happy with how the head coach conducted himself. A group of them made an official complaint to the federation and after a review in which they backed the coach 12 players got cut from the WC team.
Guess you'd have to say that the head coach knew what he was doing...
Spain must have some incredible depth in their playing stocks to pull that off and do it so well.

I had only seen one other of the Spain matches during the tournament and their speed is something else. Of all the teams I think they have the best ball control.
Despite the score line I thought it was a pretty entertaining match. Lots of chances and even though I was going for England, Spain were the better side on the park.
A very good World Cup and well done to Oz and NZ for hosting it with very little controversy or disasters.

Spain hero Olga Carmona finds out father tragically passed away before final
Spain's match-winner Olga Carmona was told of her father's passing following the game after the family decided not to tell her in the build up.The big calls in life!

It does seem like he was close to death already but talk about mixed emotions after captaining your country to win the World Cup

The right call I would say - imagine having that dumped on you just before you play the biggest game of your life

Yup. And what better way to honour his memory than for his daughter to win the world cup

I was happy to read that Spain won, as they and Japan were the two best sides to watch during the WC.
Bonmatà a deserved Golden Ball winner.
Interesting that Spain got absolutely walloped by Japan in the group stages 4-0

Watched that game in full and it was the strangest of games - Spain ended up with 70% possession and Japan sat in a low block and then broke occasionally. Virtually every shot they took ended up rifling into the net, one of the best 90 minutes of finishing ever seen. Both teams had already qualified so Spain didn't seem all that bothered.

I watched that game live. IIRC the Japanese GK also made some outstanding saves to deny Spain. The speed at which Japan moved the ball through the midfield on the counter-attack was a sight to see. They weren't able to do the same against Sweden.

I was at the Spain Sweden game. The Swedes towered over the Spaniards, but they were bloody tough, and generally withstood the physical assault well
