Wasn't it Fainganuuku or Clarke who got a yellow for doing it to an Irish player last year?
Surely if this hip to head is deemed accidental, then Ta'avao should have been given the same concession no?

He charged down the ball, so it’s deemed as a rugby accident.
The Argie player was coming from a long way away so had a lot of horizontal velocity in the charge.
If you get penalised for that then you have to outlaw chargedowns.

I agree with the sentiment, but Ta'avao was red carded for a "rugby accident" when he clashed heads with an Irish player as he tackled a bit too upright. If he gets penalised for that, then you have to outlaw upright tackling

Freddie Steward was an accident against Ireland in the 6 nations. He got a red.
And you hear the argument from certain quarters that "there are no accidents, you have a duty of care to your opponent" etc etc.
Tupou went full SBW on Laulala today. Got a yellow, that on review was not upgraded to red. It's absolutely farcical.
I just want consistency.

What happened today reminds me of the deliberate knockdown rule when a guy goes for an intercept.
If the Argie had just missed the charge down today by a cigarette papers width, would he have been given a red?
Would Barnes have said "you were never in a realistic position to make a charge down" etc.

Well recorded test and just finished watching, what a ripper it was, Couple of teams getting stuck in and playing good rugby, even Mrs Dan was sitting here saying what a good game and how much she was enjoying it! Have to say Cheika has got those Pumas in a fairly good place.

‘Good’ must be in the eye of the beholder, because I thought that was an error riddled match with two teams that were uncertain about getting the ball beyond their midfield.
Both played a very narrow attack.
Lots of offside play that went unpenalised. Loved the aggression and attack at the breakdown by both sides, but for me there wasn’t much more than that.

Surely. Given the player actually charged down the kick is considerable mitigation. The issue is you shouldn't be taking a line straight at the kicker. I'd have been happy with a penalty to SA.
I see the usual potato heads are complaining that it's the same as the CJ Stander RC, but it's entirely different to my eyes. CJ leapt after the kick and was never in a position to make a charge down.

Disagree completely. They look remarkably limited; spending almost all their energy securing ruck ball meaning there's almost no options presented to the defence.

@ACT-Crusader I enjoyed the physicallity of it, I know I didn't have any skin in game, but even my wife enjoyed it!

Interesting test match. Lots of passion and commitment from both teams. Unfortunately also lots of inaccuracy from both. If you were a neutral, probably a thrilling game to watch. Could have gone either way. The Boks will be grateful the Pumas missed a few penalty shots.
As a Bok fan, it was a frustrating. We just can't be that sloppy. I guess one could say it's all still build up for RWC but frankly I'd expect us to be in a better place by now.
Have to say I really feel for Grant Williams. Must have been so thrilled with a first test start only to last about 15 seconds before getting knocked out cold. Hope he's ok. That looked like a nasty blow.
